Cubs depart ways with Prior, excited about Fukudome

After dealing with the prolonged injures from a span of 2 years the Cubs have cut ties with Mark Prior. All along I thought it would be Kerry Wood making an exit, but that wasn't the case. Cubs management is staying busy this off-season signing new players and renewing contracts. The big acquisition so far has been Japanese player Kosuke Fukudome. Jim Hendry decided to shell out the big bucks for 30-year-old outfielder, signing him to a 4-year $48 million contract. I'd take this as good news for Cubs fans compared to the steroids report in MLB.

Thankfully none of the current Cubs players on the roster were noted on the steroids list prepared by Senator George Mitchell. This isn't to say a couple former Cubs didn't surface in the 409-page report. The Cubs can take their mind off the investigation since no one within the organization has been linked to steriods use, distribution, etc. Another contract renewal was granted recently as the Cubs signed Neal Cotts to a 1-year deal worth $800,000.

Let's just hope as Cubs fans none of the relievers on the roster get the urge to try anabolic steroids or HGH. With the whirlwind fuss the Mitchell report has created it may not be a problem. I just want to see Hendry execute smart deals this off-season. From an offensive standpoint there is always room for improvement. Keep up the good work and don't start getting chincy again Hendry!

Cubs interested in Kaz Matsui instead of real talent

Yes, it's been a while since I've updated this page and for good reason. Dealing with the postseason outcome was too infuriating. Now months later I think I'm over it. Well, the Cubs are up to their old tricks and cheap-spending tactics again or so it seems. Rumor has it management is considering offering a deal to Kaz Matsui. Again, I understand where this is going. The infielder had a few hits in the playoffs and now the geniuses operating the franchise think he's a good candidate to replace someone on the infield. Dead wrong as usual fellas, this guy will only be taking up space and be useless from an offensive standpoint.

Also, word has been going around whether Kerry will stick around or not. At this point I don't see what real difference it will make. I like him in the bullpen as long as he pitches an inning or so, but he has nothing to do with the offensive shortages plaquing this franchise. Will when old nobhead Hendry realize this? How many freaking years will it take for him to get the DAMN message?? Cub fans want to see smart deals going down and not constantly hearing what crummy players management has in mind for the 2008 team. Forget about Kaz and concentrate on the high-market players, the only real logical investments!

It was fun while it lasted...so long to a promising year

The outcome of the 2007 season was inevitable for the Chicago Cubs. The regular season games were fun to watch as well as witness the Cubs win the NL Central. Playoff celebrations weren't in order though this year (as with numerous desolate past seasons). I'm not that surprised this team couldn't reach the second round yet how they let the D-backs sweep them I can't fathom. Inconsistent offense has plagued the 2007 club all year so the inefficiencies at the plate should have been expected. A younger, talented hungry team got the best of them in Game 1 in my opinion.

Taking the wind out of their sails, the D-backs had nothing to fear or worry about in the series. When Zambrano was pulled from Game 1 after tossing 85 pitches that effected the rest of division series. Like I said before he definitely earned a win, but didn't receive a chance to get a decision. Everyone is questioning Lou for his decision and they have that right. Sure old Lou wanted to rest Carlos to make a start in a possible Game 4 (of course that didn't happen), but he also knew the Cubs ace was in the 'zone.' Besides that the lineup didn't produce squat for Z or the rest of the starters in the series. As the legendary Harry Carey used to say on the air, "You can't win without scoring runs no matter how good your pitching holds up."

As a century of desolation rolls around now I can only imagine the utter torment Chicago baseball historians and die-heart fans are going through as well as the number of times Harry Carey is rolling over in his grave. It's a damn freaking shame the Cubs failed to even notch 1 victory in the division series. After the second loss in Arizona it was already over. Witnessing the failed scoring chances with the spine-chilling double plays the Cubs hit into and the numerous stranded runners on base was so excruciating...it was like having a knife plunged into your gut as a Cub's fan.

I hear all the time how teams are motivated to excel and reach the highest level of goals. For the Cubs I don't know what the hell it's going to take to drive them...a championship drought of 99 years and counting ought to be ENOUGH!! What astonishes me is no matter how awful the franchise plays or lets down the city the fans sell out Wrigley Field. Nothing results in being bittersweet for them it's always just bitter. Okay the Cubs did win the Central, but what loyal Cub fans are actually happy with that? I guess with the Phillies and Angels getting sweep it takes a little less attention off the Cubs. Then again what do their fans know about misery they haven't waited a WHOLE DAMN CENTURY for a World Series title! Forget about 'wait 'til next year and just postpone the 2008 season for as long as they can find a way to manifest a miracle!

Cubs in a hole, down 0-2 with little breathing room

Getting all hopes up as a Cubs fan usually is a waste of time. I knew this 07 Cubs team was lucky to enter the playoffs considering how inconsistent their offense was all year long. This aspect of their game haunted them last night in Arizona. Heading back to Chicago they're facing elimination, down 0-2 after last night's 8-4 loss. As mentioned by the TBS broadcasters covering the game the Cubs seemed to have underestimated the D-backs. Then again most of their lineup is filled with virtual unknowns and who would've expected the Arizona bullpen to hold leads so well.

During crunch time the Cub bats have gone silent for the most part in this series. Zambrano did a heck of job in Game 1 and when he left the game in the 7th the Cubs still didn't provide any run support for him. He definitely should've won that game instead of seeing it slip away and the Cubs being defeated 3-1. As a continuation from the regular season the Cubs lineup is leaving way too many runners on base. This has caused them to have forced their backs against the wall and must win 3 consecutive games in order to advance to the second round.

Ted Lilly had nothing working in his favor Thursday night and only pitched 4 innings, yielding 6 runs in the process. Giovanni Soto did crack a 2-run homer in the early innings to give the starter a lead, but after that the batting order failed to scratch another run home until the 7th or 8th with a pinch-hit 2-run double by Daryl Ward. That has to be frustrating for a pitcher, who constantly must be reminded of the score or have it on his mind. Game 1 was a great pitcher's duel between Zambrano and Webb. Unfortunately, Webb gained a few insurance runs from his teammates in the 8th inning. I'm still wondering though why Lou pulled Carlos from the game so soon as he only reached around a 85-pitch count...not sure what the conversation was like on the mound.

The Cubs face more than an uphill battle returning to Wrigley Field for Game 3 and possibly Game 4. Unable to score sufficient runs (with this type of lineup it's unbelievable) pulling off a miracle is what it's going to take. Heck, even last night the D-backs were allowing them to get back in the game when Ojeda bobbled a toss to turn a double-play in the 9th. That left runners on first and second with 1 out. Lee and Ramirez were 1-for-9 in the game and both struck out in their final at-bats. There is no way the Cubs will survive at home if both sluggers duplicate this offensive breakdown.

*As a special feature link for the playoffs Cub fans check out Mark DeRosa's blog and read his thoughts and opinions on the division series.

I'm also a little bothered with the starters for Game 3. Jason Marquis ought to be starting rather than Rich Hill against Livan Hernandez. I know experience hasn't been much of a factor so far, but I like the chances better with veteran vs. veteran. It just makes more sense to me. However, if the lineup doesn't produce enough runs it won't matter who starts Game 3. Winning a low scoring one-run game most likely isn't in the cards for the Cubs. With today off I can only imagine what the players are thinking. I'd like to see a bolt of electricity charge those darn bats (more wishful thinking) or the guys in blue get a surge of adrenaline and ride the momentum. Fight, fight, fight Cubs the crowd is fully behind you at Wrigley! Let's get a win!

Cubs set to face D-backs in division playoff series

The playoff matchups are almost all set for October. The only two NL teams laying in wake of a postseason birth are Colorado and San Diego, who square in a tie-breaker for the wildcard. It's been memorable season with several high and lows for the Cubs. A week ago I didn't know if they'd survive and clinch then the champagne celebration erupted in clubhouse after finding out they won the pennant. They lost their season finale 8-4 in Cincy, but all anyone cares about is they're headed to the playoffs.

With the worst record coming into the postseason the Cubs have their work cut out for them. They'll play the D-backs in Arizona for Game 1 and 2. Zambrano and Lilly will start for these contests. Power will be a huge asset for the Cubs. They need it to win the series I think. Soriano made an impact in September with 14 homeruns. He leads the team with the most homeruns (33). He's served as a spark plug and motivator in the lead-off role. When he returned to the team late in the season his energy seemed to rub off on his teammates and effect their overall play.

Let's not forget about D. Lee and Ramirez and how steady their bats have been all year. Both have hit over .300 with at least 22 homeruns a piece. Aramis is the team leader in RBIs with 101. Run production from them is also crucial. The guys on the bench like Floyd, Ward, Cedeno, and Pie will be called upon to deliver in clutch pinch hitting roles, defensive purposes, and potential sacrifice bunt or hit and run situations. Everyone has to be on their toes especially the bullpen where holding leads could mean the difference in winning the series. Game 1 of the division series starts Wednesday night in Arizona. You'd be crazy to miss it!

Cubs clinch division, hooray, hooray!

What a sigh of relief for Cub fans! The playoffs are no doubt in the Cubs' horizon. With a 6-0 shutout behind a pure gem by Carlos Zambrano the Cubs clinched the NL Central. To my surprise it only took 84 wins to wrap up the NL Central. Thanks in part to the Brewers' loss against the Padres last night it put the Cubs up 3 games, knocking the opposition out of playoff contention. I was starting to worry until they pulled off the victory, it appeared as if the division race would be decided in the last 2 games of the regular season. I'm sure glad that wasn't the case.

As far as the historic game, it was pertinent the offense delivered. That's what happened as both D. Lee and Soriano crushed homeruns while the rest of the lineup chipped in with clutch hits. This veteran bench and youthful mix of talent on the club is one of their top strengths. All that's on anyone's mind involved or following this franchise is they're headed to the postseason, oh yeah! This will mark the 3rd time in 7 years the Cubs will make a playoff appearance (Still can't get over the 1989 series against the Giants). The fellas can relax now and start to prepare for the intense action awaiting them this October.

My gut instinct told me Carlos Zambrano would bring his A game and steer this club in the right direction again. He went on to notch up his 18th win. Howry and Dempster combined for 2 scoreless innings Friday night allowing just 2 hits. These two final games with the Reds look to be a breeze now that the Cubs have clinched the playoffs. Lou should be given a lot of credit for his role in getting his team to be play with a boost in confidence. Can't wait until the postseason to catch the thrilling action. Congratulations to the 2007 Chicago Cubs on becoming NL Central Champions! Way to go!

Nothing but bad luck for Cubs in Florida

The final road trip has looked real grim for the Cubs. They couldn't even grab one game against the Marlins. That's weights so heavily on the pennant race in the Central. I don't understand why this franchise has such bad luck against the Marlins. Ted Lilly had yet to win a game against them in his career coming into the series and the offense again has struggled. What happened to the pop of those bats which were booming about a week ago? Steve Traschel who pitched just 4.1 innings in his Thursday afternoon start hasn't shown good stuff on the mound since joining the team. Giving up 5 runs put the Cubs in a pressure situation and seemed to make them too anxious.

*Hey fans be sure to visit Northside Lounge for more news, opinions, Cub updates, and links.

Ramirez and Soriano combined for 6 hits, but no one else much could get on base ahead of them. When guys swing too early in the count and ground into double plays like yesterday momentum is halted and it takes a team right out of an inning. The 10 hits from the lineup were irrelevant since the Cubs stranded 10 runners on base. This club has experienced offensive shortages for periods off and on throughout the season. If they truly want to win the pennant they MUST succeed on scoring opportunities. Otherwise they'll continue to work themselves into jams and find themselves trailing.

All the Cubs have to do is win 2 games to reach the playoffs. That's easier said than done. I can't believe they let the Marlins sweep them. They can't allow the Reds to give them the same trouble. There is no need to rush or go into panic mode in this final series. Big Z takes the mound today in Cincy against Bronson Arroyo. The Cubs ace will be fired up! I'd like to see at least a 4-5 run support for him. Once Zambrano get confident it's hard to stop him. Come on guys in blue, don't give up you're almost there. Just win two games, go Cubs!!

Willis, Marlins slide past Cubs 4-2

Extending the winning streak would have been great. Dontrelle Willis, however didn't let that occur Tuesday night in Florida as he pitched 8 innings dealing hard against the Cubs lineup. Ted Lilly was 0-4 coming into the game against the Marlins and was credited with all 4 earned runs. The southpaw went 5 innings allowing 8 hits and a walk. The Cubs were held to 3 hits. Their offense came from a 2-run homer by Craig Monroe.

I was afraid the Cubs may get too relaxed now after viewing the NL Central standings. The Brewers are 2 games back at the moment with a victory last night. The recent hitting outburst needs to resume tonight in Game 2 of the series because so much is still riding on these final 5 games. Usually this Cubs team scores most of their runs on the long ball, but timely hitting and execution is necessary for them to take the road series in Florida.

Coming off a good start Jason Marquis (12-8) is called upon to lead the Cubs to a win. I expect for him to go 5-7 innings. D. Lee and Soriano must keep pounding away and drive in those crucial runs. Look for Theriot to be a spark plug near the top of the order with influential bench hitting spots from Cliff Floyd, Daryl Ward, or Felix Pie. The odds are in favor of the Cubs yet they can't get lazy! Coral those Fish and take 2-of-3 before traveling to Cincy! Go Cubs Go!

Zambrano shuts out Pirates as Cubs gain extra ground

Thanks in part to a masterful pitching showcase by Carlos Zambrano the Cubs sailed to a 8-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Wrigley. Derek Lee and Ronnie Cedeno generated most of the offensive firepower, each smacking 2-run homers. They extended their division lead to 3.5 games over Milwaukee. With only 6 remaining games on the schedule the Cubs are inching ever so close to capturing the pennant. Zambrano regained his natural form with 6 innings of shutout ball, allowing 3 hits and 3 walks. He left the game in the 7th due to cramping with a big lead, which stayed intact and collected his 17th win.

Derek Lee had a big game with 2 hits and 3 RBIs while the lineup accumulated 14 hits. 5 players had at least 2 hits a piece. With the sweep to close out the home series finale the Cubs have their eyes set on the playoffs. First they have to take care of the Marlins and Reds to finish the season out on the road. All the Cubs have to do is concentrate on staying ahead of the Brewers. Things keep looking better and better for a franchise who has come up short of a world title for damn near a century. With Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez hot nothing will stand in this new Cub team's way.

I have to give Kerry Wood much credit in what he accomplished yesterday by pitching 2 innings late without giving up a hit or run! This guy had a rough, up hill battle in the last couple of years and it's good to see him become a significant contributing part of this club again. The off-day today will give the bullpen and the lineup rest before they start their 3-game series in Florida. Seeing the Cubs take the series and end up clinching the pennant will be a huge weight lifted off their shoulders.

Then after the celebration in Chicago they can relax a little before charging into the playoffs. From there the atmosphere will be electric, but the competition will be fierce with nothing coming easy their way. Keep those bats warm and ready to strike guys. Those rotten Cardinals are out of sight so no worries there. Take care of business in Florida and Cincy and bring home the PENNANT! WOOOOOOOO! GO CUBS!!

5-2 loss at Wrigley ties Cubs with Brewers

I know a minor setback isn't worth worrying over. Yet as a Cub fan one flaw or spell of misfortune is potentially hazardous for the remainder of the year. This 2007 club is different from all the rest in the past. Yes, they've struggled and been inconsistent, but somehow managed to pull together and fight their battles. Last night a win was not in the cards however, as Zambrano couldn't rediscover his magic, pitching just 5.1 innings while serving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in route to the 5-2 loss. I don't expect Z to pull off stellar performances back-to-back. He's got to settle down and get the command on his pitches like he had earlier in the season.

Jacque Jones slapped a 2-run single through the infield in the 4th for the allotted offense Tuesday night. The guys in blue couldn't make a repeat comeback as they did the previous night at Wrigley. Now they are tied again with the Brewers atop the Central, who seem to be hitting the daylights out of the baseball with Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, and Geoff Jenkins on a tear. The Cubs have no more games with Milwaukee as 10 games remain on the schedule. If the Brewers get hot it's going to be a major problem. Two sweeps in a row would have really helped the Cubs on the road.

Maintaining their stride and pushing for a win streak is in their best interest. Scheduled for upcoming starts are Lilly (15-7), Marquis (12-8), and Hill (9-8). The trio has pressure riding on them, but if they focus and buckle down the Cubs will be okay. I can't believe this Cubs team hasn't won over 80 games already. This will be a big factor in the final series against Cincy. Tonight Ted Lilly should be ready and able to give his team a solid 6 innings or more in route to a win (fingers crossed).

P.S. Cub fans visit this Ted Lilly Fan Club site for great videos, news, surveys, and more!

Cubs looking sharp, take 3-of-4 from Cards

The series in St. Louis was a real success as far as the Cubs are concerned. The 1-run loss was the only small flaw and that game could have gone either way. Zambrano, Lilly, and Marquis (winner from Sunday's contest) all had good starts. The offense yesterday evolved from Matt Murton who drilled a fat 3-run shot off Mark Mulder in the early going. From there the Cubs only scored a run, but it was plenty for Jason Marquis. He collected his 12th win. With the victory Chicago takes a 1 game lead over the Brewers.

I have to like how the final weeks of the season are shaping up for the Cubs. They came so close to back-to-back sweeps against the Astros and Cardinals. They're 78-72 which is okay yet doesn't allow them to get comfortable. Finishing out the remainder of the schedule at home should be a treat. One problem this club MUST correct is being able to drive in runners on base. In Sunday's matchup the Cubs stranded 25 runners!! Luckily their opponent fared almost the same leaving 21 on base.

The Reds come into town today and Wrigley will no doubt be packed for the final homestand. Rich Hill (9-8) will start in Game 1 against Bronson Arroyo (9-14). Cincy are playing the role of spoilers and most likely won't play lackluster baseball. Rich better watch out for Dunn, Phillips, and Griffey. Keep plugging and extend the win streak Cubbies!

Homers from Soriano, Ramirez wrap up win

The series at Houston went smooth except for the fact that the Cubs lost the opener in extra innings. They have a great opportunity at a sweep on the road, but came up by the shortest of margins. Last night, however it was all gravy because the Cub bats sprung into action and drove in 6 runs, all I might add off homeruns! Soriano crushed his 25th while Ramirez went deep for his 23rd of the year. That's the type of sweet offense I like to see. Daryl Ward and Cliff Floyd also popped one bomb a piece into the stands. Steve Traschel garnered his first win after going 5 innings to qualify for the decision. I'm glad Lou left him in the game in the 5th.

Seeing the increase in production makes this Cub fan feel good. Pitching can only go so far for this club and can't guarantee wins of any variety (close or wide). 11 hits left a good impression to finish out the series as the Cubs play 3 games in St. Louis starting today. A sweep could do wonders for them. The half game lead in the Central isn't comforting. Carlos Zambrano (15-12) will have to pitch under a degree of control and fend off Adam Wainwright (13-10) and the Cardinals.

* Cub fans be sure to check out this neat Fox Sports Cub blog.

Stepping up in the clutch and nailing these games down are crucial. Guys in pressure-filled spots such as in mid-relief or in a save's opportunity can't be mental worry-warts or become too emotional in the heat of battle. This will ultimately work against the Cubs. They must keep cool heads and stay focused. Lou will lead the charge and hopefully offers words of wisdom and encouragement to the animated, high energy Zambrano. Dropkick those Cards and work towards capturing the pennant! Wooooooo, yeah...go Cubs!

Back in first after clobbering Cardinals

The sweet swings from yesterday's 12-3 bashing was a sight to see. I was pleased to see the production from the guys in blue. Aramis Ramirez was the player of the game with 4 hits, 2 being homeruns and 2 RBIs. Derek Lee went 3-for-4 with a homerun while Jacque Jones cashed in on 3 hits and 2 RBIs. 18 total hits were crunched out. Ted Lilly went on to record his 15th win, best among the rotation. I'm sure glad the Cubs picked up the W because the Brewers lost in to the Pirates to force a tie in the Central.

3 games over .500 is not good, but kind of expected with all the Central division teams playing up and down baseball. The Cubs have to charge forward and try their best to garner a lead and take the series in Houston before facing St. Louis on the road for 3 games. I'd like to see the hard hitting continue and this great mix of players drive in ample runs. Now is definitely the time to get serious and focus on one game at a time and not worry about the standings. Taking 2-of-3 from the Astros is a realistic goal now. I think the magic number for the Cubs is 88 wins. They're 15 away from that mark. Come on Cubs push to keep that top position!

Monday, September 10

Out of first and out of whack; what's next?

I'm glad the Sunday afternoon game in Pittsburgh wasn't televised because it would've been painful to watch. The 10-5 loss knocked the Cubs right out of first place in the Central. They've failed to get a streak going or some kind of rally. Steve Trachsel's performance left a lot to be desired. He hasn't looked sharp in either of his two starts. Sunday he went only 2 innings while surrendering 6 earned runs on 6 hits and a walk. After I complimented the starting pitching and bullpen they pull such a horrible stunt.

Soriano cranked his 24th homer, but again to no avail as the bullpen gave up 4 more runs, 3 which came from Kerry Wood who couldn't even retire a batter in the 8th inning. Why does this club struggle so much against non-contenders which have possess no real threat. Cub fans have come to expect the breakdowns and utter chaos around this time each season. Yet it seems as if they're concentrating too much on the division race rather than on their current opponents. This is a great hindrance for any team seeking a postseason birth.

I'm sick of seeing games where the Cubs do score sufficient runs then the bullpens falls apart or the offense scuffles when a starter goes deep into a game and keeps them within striking distance. Lou Piniella, I like and have utmost respect for him, but for God Sakes don't give Wood the ball in a situation where the Cubs have a good chance to win or unless they have a comfortable lead. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble. Kerry isn't the pitcher he used to be, everyone has to face this reality. I'd rather see Marmol, Howry, and Eyre in mid-relief because they, for the most part have proved to be effective.

I had no idea what to expect today as the make up game with the Cardinals will be this afternoon at Wrigley before the Cubs travel to Houston for a 3-game series. No time for more screw ups and inconsistency. The defense has been of high quality all year. Straightening out all other flaws is the main challenge. Ted Lilly (14-7) to the hill to square off against Joel Piniero (4-2). The Cubs need to fight and do anything to record a victory...take no prisoners Cubs!

Pittsburgh not so kind in Game 1, Cubs hanging on barely

The last 3 games have proved to be wretched for the Cubs. They gave away a lead at home against the Dodgers in the final game of the series and allowed things to get even tighter in the Central. Thanks however to losses by the Cardinals and Brewers Friday night the 6-1 defeat against the Pirates didn't hurt as much. Why the Cubs can't get a run or streak going is beyond me. One night the offense is alive and well and the next it's dead cold. There is absolutely no consistency within the lineup. Derek Lee has keep his hitting touch active, serving up 2 hits in the loss last night.

Luckily the Cubs don't trail their division opponents by a wide margin. They have to reach 80 wins here soon or else St. Louis may blow by them and run away with the pennant. Cub fans sure don't want to see such a travesty occur. Rich Hill (8-8) got touched up for 6 runs on 9 hits and a walk. The run support for starters has become a major issue again. This can't continue to plaque the club in such a hot division race. I plan on checking out the game tonight on WGN and hope to see the guys bang out a decent amount of runs. Soriano better refrain from swinging at pitches low and outside of the strike zone and do his best to get on base for Lee and Ramirez.

With 22 homeruns many fans feel Alfonso shouldn't stay at the lead-off spot. I agree because he'd have a better chance to drive in runs in the no. 2 slot. Maybe hitting 3rd is an option without one of the other 2 boppers in the lineup, but definitely not in the 5th hole. Jacque Jones and Cliff Floyd have served well in the rotating shifts in the outfield. I'd like to see Monroe turn his swing around and drive in runs.

Lou can't be too anxious to pull guys in and out of games when they're performing well. He must be careful in making such timely decisions. Zambrano (14-11) has to bring a quality start to the table tonight at PNC Park and keep his mouth and emotions in check as he battles the Bucs' Ian Snell (9-11). Get your butts in gear Cubs!!

Lilly in control, brushes off Dodgers in 8-2 victory

A sense of worry and panic seemed to be in the air at Wrigley last night as both coach and general manager were both seen by ESPN cameras pacing and antsy. Lou was pulling out all the stops in the 8-2 win by using most of his bench, switching his defensive alignment, and experimenting with his bullpen. Aramis Ramirez pushed the Cubs ahead early with a 2-run homer off Dodgers' starter Eric Stults, who lasted just 4.1 innings. Derek Lee roped a single later and a run scored off a misplayed ball in the outfield.

Mark DeRosa gave the Cubs an extra cushion with a big 2-run single in the 8th inning. The lineup delivered 13 hits while the pitching dazzled and delighted the packed home crowd. It's amazing how faithful Cub fans are that they always come out in mass multitudes whether the team is winning or losing. Ted Lilly gave them a major reason to stick around and watch all the action. He pitched 6.2 innings with 6 hits, a walk, and 2 runs to his credit, which lead to his 14th win. He's owns the best record in the rotation.

The youth and exurberance was on display Wednesday night at Wrigley as Lou 'mixed things up'. Felix Pie made a brief experience and had two nice running catches in center before slipping on the wet grass while Theriot entered the game late smacking a hit off the Dodger's bullpen. The mixture of young talent and veteran experience is starting pay dividends for the franchise. Finally GM Jim Hendry has seen the light! Or at least a shimmering of it. I have to admit I feel good about the rotation, defense, bench, and bullpen. The offense has it's moments, but still is kind of up and down.

Today the Cubs at this moment are trailing the Dodgers 2-1 in the 7th. This game could be crucial for them. Both teams are in a playoff race with little breathing room. Not having Ramirez is the order really hurts. Somebody must step up and deliver in the clutch. Splitting the series is almost a necessity at this point. Come on Cubs make a comeback!

Cubs drop two in a row, lead down to half a game

The pitching hasn't shown to hold up well in the series so far at home against the Dodgers. Zambrano had another bad outing on Monday and reacted the wrong way after the game. Of course emotional, passionate players like him will get upset and regret comments they make later. I think Carlos just needs to find a comfort zone and keep good control on strike locations. Usually he does, but now the Cubs need him to step up more than ever.

Yesterday in Game 2 Steve Trachsel pitched his first game and did okay, giving up just 3 runs in 6 innings. The offense didn't produce any more than 2 runs on 8 hits. Daryl Ward made a start in right field and went 2-for-3 with a RBI and runs scored. An average of 4-5 runs a game is key this late in the season. The lineup is fine, Jacque Jones is turning his plate approach around to his effect and guys off the bench are serving bigger roles.

The Cubs need to jump on top of Dodger pitching early against starter Eric Stults (1-2). Lilly shoots for his 14th win tonight at Wrigley. I really don't see why him or Zambrano shouldn't have become 20-game winners. They've had bad breaks and poor luck on certain occassions.

I think Piniella would be wise to start Matt Murton in right field or Feliz Pie. Plus he can start using Cedeno more off the bench. This team needs as much offense as they can possibly get heading into the final weeks. Bring out the big lumber tonight guys and good luck!

Lee's 2-run homer game winner, Wrigley host Dodgers

It was power and a sweet leather in the outfield which enabled the Cubs to come from behind Sunday afternoon in Wrigley to dust off the Astros, to take the series 2-of-3. Jacque Jones made a spectacular catch in right-center to save a run. He made sure Soriano wouldn't have to strain himself to make the out. Aramis Ramirez was wrongfully called out on strikes and then ejected after slamming his helmet to the ground and exchanging words with the home plate umpire.

Lee's 2-run homer came in the 8th to give the Cubs a 6-5 lead. Soriano went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored the tying run. Carlos Zambrano is pitching today against Esteban Loaiza. The game is tied 1-1 now in the 3rd. Check out stats and game on the WGN blog. Soriano hit a solo homer to lead off the game. The Cubs hold a small lead in the Central and really could use a 2 straight wins again if not a sweep. They're 70-65, which is decent at the time being. A game and an half lead won't last long so applying the most pressure as possible.

With the rest of September to play the Cubs have around 25-27 more games to play. They must make the most of pitcher mismatches and utilize team effort against their opponents weaknesses. During crunch time all eyes will be on Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano to deliver. Plus the club has a sense of relief in rotation by adding former Cub, Steve Traschel. His arm will probably make a difference in the last 2 weeks of the season. Beat those Dodgers! Go Cubs!

Jones supplies big hit in Cubs 5-3 triumph

The Cubs are back in the swing of things. They came back from a 3-0 deficit against the Brewers Tuesday night to win Game 1 of the series at home. Rich Hill left a lasting impression with a 7-inning 7-hit 3-run performance. The southpaw moved to 8-7. He recorded 9 strikeouts and kept his team in the game. To add to his Jacque Jones' highlight 2-run double Jason Kendall served up 2 hits and a run scored. I'm glad to see pitching and hitting come together in an executable manner.

With 2 games up on the Brewers it's really time hammer on the pressure in this series and wish for the best: have St. Louis lose a string of games. 90 wins is more than possible for this new Cubs team. Just over a month is left and it's more than feasible for the Cubs to reach this goal if not do better. A great matchup ensues today as Carlos Zambrano (14-10) against Ben Sheets (10-4). The Milwaukee hurler is coming off an early so the Cubs lineup ought to attack him early. I expect Big Z to rebound from his last and put an empathic emphasis on performance. Take it to the Brew Crew and push that lead further!

Trip to Arizona not so fulfilling, Cubs tied for first

I looked forward to watching the Saturday night game in Arizona on WGN as I rarely catch the games during the week anymore because I don't have cable. The back-to-back losses, though tough to watch didn't hurt the Cubs much. They are deadlocked for first place with the Brewers. This team has to generate sufficient runs every game in order to win. So far they've done a good job up until this past weekend. The 5-4 loss Sunday was a sham. The game should have went the Cubs way.

*Cub fans find other news and conservations on issues and players at the Cubs message board.

Derek Lee (15) and Cliff Floyd (5) launched homers to give the Cubs a lead. Jason Marquis faired okay, but again caught a bad break and dropped to 10-8. His 5 runs allowed just couldn't quite keep his team in the game. I'm glad Floyd is playing (after coping with his father's death). He's a good veteran to have on the field, getting more at-bats to drive in runs. Other than the homeruns the lineup didn't manufacture much.

Jim Hendry made a pretty good deal in trading for outfielder Craig Monroe. The former Detroit Tiger has dealt with injuries this year and I know the Cubs are trying to be careful to not overextend his abilities and time in the outfield. Another bat like his is always needed. If the Cubs can get Soriano back from DL within the next week that would be great. I'm not sure how far he's coming along, but he's stayed in the dugout providing moral support.

After watching Kerry Wood pitch this weekend I think it's best for Lou not to put him in games when the Cubs are tied or have a small lead. You just never know what to expect from him on the mound. I do like the positioning in the batting order. Now the Cubs have to really buckle down and jump ahead of the Brewers and Cardinals somehow. They face Milwaukee starting today for a 3-game set at Wrigley. Time to get those bats a cranking! Go Cubs!

Marshall and company down hot D-backs 6-2

I knew Sean Marshall was on the verge of catching good breaks. The young right-hander has proved he can go at least 5 innings for this club and pitch effective. That's exactly what happened Friday night in Arizona. Derek Lee and Mark DeRosa got the offense going with RBI singles in the 1st inning. Offensively the Cubs looked good with 14 total hits. 3 guys in the lineup had 2 or more hits. Jacque Jones has shown vast improvement over the last 2-3 weeks. He finished the game with 4 hits, a run, and RBI.

Hats off to Marshall for another splendid outing which he finally got the decision or kept the Cubs in the game all the way. Going 6 innings he allowed a run on 2 hits and a walk. What a nice performance! He had 5 strikeouts. The bullpen was terrific as well, not allowing a run to score after their starter's departure. Ryan Dempster picked up his 21st save. He needs to pitch as much as possible in these situations because that's the only way he'll become consistent. With Marmol, Wuertz, and Howry coming on in middle relief everything seems to be going smoothly. Great job by them as well last night!

Not just the bullpen is showing great potential, but also the defense. What a play Ryan Theriot made in the game to save a run! The more I see the infielder the more I like him. He's a reliable contact hitter, who finds a way to get on base often. This is always a plus. Ted Lilly (13-6) deals against Doug Davis (10-11) tonight. I feel Lilly will have the upper hand in this encounter. The offense will be ready to attack. Keep pushing and don't get lazy Cubbies! Take control of that first place spot!

Cubs prevail in extras 4-2, Marmol records 3rd win

The road trip is going swell on the West Coast up to now. Those Cubbies are playing inspired baseball, pushing across two runs in the 10th last night to beat the Giants 4-2. Aramis Ramirez rocked a double in the early innings to put a run on the board and drove 2 for the games. The Cubs scratched across 2 runs to break the tie game in the 10th. Carlos Marmol entered in the 8th and did a terrific job to hold the game.

What a pitching showcase by Rich Hill! He went 7 innings and mowed down 11 batters while giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits. This victory is a big lift for Chicago. Such pitching outings are always applauded and welcomed. Ryan Dempster recorded his 20th save, pitching a perfect inning. I think he belongs in the closer spot. Rotating him and Howry is okay, but I say give him the ball most of the time.

Holding a small margin still in first the Cubs have got to keep winning. A long streak would do wonders for them. Those darn Cardinals always find a way to sneak back into the race. Milwaukee is on the verge of reeling now. It's best for the Cubs to take full advantage. Game 3 in San Francisco this afternoon will showcase Carlos Zambrano (14-9) vs. Matt Cain (5-13). The Cubs can't miss out on this golden opportunity for a sweep. I know Big Z is game and ready for action! Get those brooms out!

Despite rain at home, Cubs take 2-of-3 from Cards

On a rainy afternoon in Wrigley the Cubs tried to make the most of their situation. The bats did a little damage, but couldn't provide a lead late. As a result they lost 6-4. I'm happy to see the Cubs grab this series at home. If not for the rainout Sunday they very well may have took 3-of-4. That game was postponed and will rescheduled for late September most likely. The action yesterday at the friendly confines displayed Derek Lee smacking a 2-run homer in Game 4.

Daryl Ward had another big day with 3 hits, 1 including a solo shot for his 2nd of the year. Ryan Theriot also played well, going 2-for-4 with a runs scored. Ted Lilly unfortunately dropped to 13-6, credited with the loss. He had been on a roll until last week or so. In 6 innings he surrendered 5 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. Overall, the Cubs are still playing consistent baseball. Finding a way to stay ahead in the standings is what truly matters.

Coming up the Cubs go on the road for their final West Coast trip of the season. They see the Giants for 3 games then travel to Arizona for what should be a challenging series before returning to Milwaukee to battle the Brew Crew. Bringing the bats ready to tee off and be productive is a must! Lee and Ramirez are started to heat up again and Ward has done a fine job off the bench and wherever he's filled in recently. Take it to those San Frans with a battle at the Bay! Go Cubs!

Cubs edge Cards 2-1, so far so good

Rich Hill performed far beyond expectation yesterday afternoon at Wrigley. The friendly confines was packed with a spirited crowd that had plenty to cheer about. The hits were few and far between, but the pitching was well worth watching. Hill tossed a near gem, going 7 strong innings and yielding just a run, which was a solo homer by Albert Puljos. Jacque Jones was the player of the game. He made a great catch in center to save a run and hit a 2-run homer which won the game for the Cubs.

A hot streak would be great right about now. The hitting will have to pick up though for this to happen. I liked seeing Dempster come on in the 9th yesterday to nail down the game. Howry and him have took turns as the closer. Marmol has looked good in his appearances as well. With the win at Wrigley Friday afternoon the Cubs pulled into first place in the Central. They hold a half game over the Brewers. Sean Marshall (5-6) starts today against the Cards' Anthony Reyes (2-11). The young right-hander need to catch a break in this contest. He's had too much tough luck in recent starts.

Cubs put 7 spot on scoreboard in 7th to earn win

The bats sprung into action last night and poured on the runs against the Reds. The 20-hit showcase allowed for 12 runs. Mark DeRosa was perfect, going 5-for-5 with 4 RBIs in the 12-4 clout. Aramis Ramirez and Jacque Jones also added 4 a piece. Jason Marquis improved to 10-7 after pitching 6 quality innings of 7-hit, 4-run ball. The Cubs really needed this win.

Finding themselves (luckily) only a half game in back of the Brewers, they will face the Cardinals starting today for a 4-game series at Wrigley. This is a huge series! Taking advantage of the opportunity to gain ground in the Central could change the course of second half run for the Cubs. They normally step up to the challenge against their top rival.

Braden Looper (10-9) and Rich Hill (6-7)square off in Game 1. Plenty of offense is needed for the Cubs to take the series. With Ramirez back in full swing and much of the lineup producing taking 3-of-4 is a good goal. Of course getting a sweep would be great. The Cubs can't afford to slip a couple games under .500. Both Milwaukee and St. Louis will push for late runs in August and September. If the Cubs can get 5-6 innings from Hill they should be in good shape today.

Cubs nipped 6-5 at Wrigley by Reds

The home opener for the series with the Reds didn't result in the Cubs favor. It was another close game the Cubs dropped. Aramis Ramirez and Derek Lee hit back-to-back solo shots in the 4th inning. Unfortunately, Zambrano had bad luck in this outing, allowing 6 earned runs on 13 hits. In his previous start he got a no decision, which also sucked. The animated, streaky Cubs ace fell to 14-9 on the year.

5 hits are rarely efficient for this club as Lee gave up with 2 of his own. The Cubs drop to 60-58 after the loss in Game 1, their third straight. These skids are expected around this time by Cub fans, but if the Cubs keep this up they'll dig a big hole for themselves. The energy and joy appears to be diminishing since Soriano isn't around. His teammates can't linger on his absence or fret over their own individual performances.

Sure the Central is normally wide open each year, but this franchise can't think that way. They've been burned too many times in the past. If the Cubs allow their nemesis to come back and take first it will be a damn shame. Lou Piniella is too good of a coach to sit back and watch his team crumple (Think it's time for another heated tirade and 'dirt kicking' incident to get the players fired up again). The young guys like Fontenot, Theriot, and Cedeno will have to prove themselves to keep getting playing time.

Now that I know that Lou has jerked Dempster from the permanent closer role, what's going on with the bullpen? Jim Hendry knows this club needs a few more relievers. Simply calling up guys from Triple A Iowa won't cut it. Get out the green backs or start making some freaking trades! I believe the offense will suffice until Alfonso returns, but the pen is an area for adjustments. Maybe the bullpen can rest more as Ted Lilly (13-5) heads to the hill today against some virtual unknown for the Reds.

Nothing 'brewing' in Coors for Cubs

Sunday afternoon the offense looked void of energy, unable to supply much run support for Sean Marshall. It hurts not having Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano in the lineup. I have no idea how the star third baseman will be out, but the team is in dire need of his services. 9 hits were what the lineup mustered. With the game tied in mid-innings Sean Marshall exited the game being replaced by pinch-hitter. Unable to get a decision he sat and watched from the rest of the game from the dugout.

Both Felix Pie and Eric Patterson saw playing time again, but only combined for an RBI and no hits. I like seeing the young prospects to further exposure and have these chances to learn how to play the Major League level. Derek Lee has cooled off considerably since the All-Star break and the Cubs need him to recharge his bat. His lack of power isn't that important, but his performance is in these late months. Kerry Wood didn't look sharp at all yesterday, coming in with the game tied at 3. Lou will want to put Kerry in when the Cubs have extended leads. Otherwise it's just too big a risk to let him pitch until he's comfortable on the mound.

So the Cubs took 2-of-4 in Colorado and find themselves a 1.5 games behind the Brewers. They can't keep pushing their luck. With prolonged absences of their two sluggers maybe it's necessary to find another hitter. It helps to have Daryl Ward back on the active roster, but the Cubs could use another guy to in the infield and outfield occasionally. The guys in blue ought to get rest with the off-day and be ready to do damage in the upcoming road series with the Reds and Cardinals. These games could be crucial to them in the standings depending on what Milwaukee does. At all costs, AVOID A SWEEP!

Friday, August 10

Cubs drown Rockies 10-2

What a nice transition the Cubs made last night at Coors Field. The bats sprung to life and racked up commendable totals. Jacque Jones had a breakout game, going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs. The lineup cranked out 16 hits! Being in Coors Field helped boost team morale, giving the Cubs plenty of motivation. Also with 3 or more hits was Jason Kendall and Mark Derosa who combined for 5 RBIs.

Good to see Felix Pie back in action! The Cubs really ought to consider keeping him around for a while. His bat and speed will help with him hitting near the top of the lineup. Theriot is filling in at the lead-off spot and has done a well there since the Soriano injury. Pie and him probably should hit back to back. Lou even brought Zambrano off the bench Thursday night to pinch hit. Ted Lilly bounced back from his previous start to record his 13th win.

They can pound after at pitches in this series and really rack up the runs if they want. The main goal is to grab the series and have a successful road trip. They're just 4 games over .500 at the moment and can't afford to have a long skid again. There is no good reason why they shouldn't have around a 3-4 game lead over Milwaukee. They might as well take advantage of the thin air in Colorado this weekend and blast away! Keep up the pressure on the rest of the division, go Cubs!

Cubs drop 3rd straight, taking fast downward spiral

The clubhouse must have really taken the news about Soriano's injury hard. After losing 2-1 Monday night to the Astros off a wild pitch the Cubs played no better last night. They're going to have to accept the fact their star outfielder is out for around a month. Their mental approach to the game shouldn't change just because of his absence. All of 6 hits were pounded out in Tuesday's night 5-2 loss. Such lackluster hitting performances can't become routine.

This club was playing so well from all spectrums until the unfortunate freak injury occurred. I've noticed that the Cubs have called up prospect Eric Patterson, who started and played in Houston and went 1-for-3. Kerry Wood tossed an inning, giving up just 2 hits. Not too shabby considering the Cubs still had a chance at a comeback. Sean Marshall had another disappointing outing. He allowed 5 earned runs on 7 hits. He walked none with 2 strikeouts to his totals. He falls to 5-6; which is uncharacteristic of his early season performances. He's just got to hang in there and keep his head up.

Chicago is lucky to only be a game in back of the Brewers. Starting today they'll see the Rockies for a 4-game road series before heading to Cincy then to St. Louis again. Taking these series will be in their best interest. Gaining a sense of confidence back is much needed as well. Lou Piniella must find a way to get his team to remember how to play smart, fundementally sound baseball. Hope a turnaround comes soon.

Cubs can't delay Glavine's 300th career win

The lineup gave a modest effort Sunday night at Wrigley, but Tom Glavine had too good of stuff to handle. As a result the Cubs came up short, losing 8-3. It was a tough game as I expected. Jason Marquis got off to a good start then due to an error a few runs scored after Jason lost his composure. It was inevitable that Glavine will record his 300th career win whether it was against the Cubs or not (seems odd...I remember a former player hitting his 600th homerun against them too this year).

This isn't the time to waver. The Cubs must stay focused, otherwise the Brewers are going to take a decent lead again and possibly give the Cardinals a chance to sneak back in the race. Cub fans sure don't want that to happen. Chicago has worse things to worry about after last night when Alonso Soriano strained his right quadriceps running from first to third late in the game. Hold your breath...he's expected to miss 2-4 weeks. This crap always happen around this time in the season. Sure is Wood is back, but it's not a good trade off for Having Soriano out. God, do the Cubs need his bat!

The bullpen still needs a little work. Why hasn't management gone out and retrieved a few good relievers? Is Dempster injured or what? I have yet to see him pitch in over 3 weeks! Ohman, Howry, and Marmol need help in the pen. They can't toss scoreless innings every time out. Neal Cotts needs to be called back up if he's indeed in Triple A (haven't see him appear in a game in a long while either). This is the real main area which demands improvement.

I think playing Matt Murton more in left would enable the Cubs to produce on more run scoring opportunities. This club has the offense to win, but guys collectively can't drag in slumps. Jacque Jones and Jason Kendall should be key players in the lineup in the final month. This freak injury with Soriano does put a damper on the clubhouse yet the Cubs can't allow it to affect their mental approach and overall play. Everybody wants him back ASAP, but until then the Cubs will have to pull together and deliver.

No walk in the park for Marshall, bullpen unable to contain Phils

Thankfully, for the Cubs they're still in first place, but are tied after a Brewers and Cubs loss. It was a close game for Chicago until the 8th inning down 7-6 when the Phillies broke it wide open, putting a 10 spot on the scoreboard. The Cubs had a golden opportunity to drive in a few more runs in the 8th and stranded a couple runners. They're still okay in the standings. Sure it wouldn't helped to pick up another game on Milwaukee and St. Louis, but that will come later.

For the most part the starting pitching had done a terrific job. Sean Marshall just had a rough start yesterday and will rebound in his next outing. He owned a 3.10 ERA coming into Thursday's game. Soriano boosted his average with 3 hits. Lee, Soriano, and Ramirez are all batting over .300. The lineup is prospering from such consistent hitting. The Mets come into town today for a big 3-game series. Carlos Zambrano (14-7) duels today with Orlando Hernandez (7-4) for an afternoon start at Wrigley. The Cubs will be tested this weekend as many feel this could shape up to be a postseason matchup. Keep swinging that sweet bat Soriano!

Wednesday, August 1

Jones makes up for error with RBI double in route to 7-3 victory

The hit parade is back into effect as last night Jason Kendall and Alfonso Soriano slugged sparked the offense with clutch hits for the Cubs. Jacque Jones are gradually showing signs of breaking out of his batting funk as he socked an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th for added measure. 10 hits got the job done in the lineup behind Jason Marquis 6 innings of 8-hit 3-run ball. He rebounded from his last start to improve to 8-6.

Soriano went 2-for-5 with a runs scored to aid in the cause. There has shown to be a good rise in runs scored per game in June and July. Adding Kendall to the lineup will help fuel those late inning rallies and give extra support to Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano's efforts. He's a complimentary type of player. I'm glad the franchise got rid of Cesar Izturis. They really had no room for him or place along the infield. I will never understand why Cubs management traded Greg Maddux for him...it's far from mind-blogging!

The Cubs have already won 1-of-2 in the series at Wrigley against the Phillies. I feel good about them at least splitting the series. Lilly caught a tough break in his start and made one mistake which cost him the game. Tonight Sean Marshall (5-4) squares off with Jamie Moyer (9-8) for an 8:05 p.m. start at Wrigley. The blooming southpaw has a played a quality role in the rotation. I anticipate more good things from him late in the season. Go for 3 against those pesky Phils!

Monday, July 30

Cubs, Zambrano blank Reds 6-0

The pride is swelling with a clear indication of confidence as this Chicago club is in fine tine (Wow, that sounds sort of like a Viagra commercial). It was all gravy Sunday afternoon at Cinergy Field as the Cubs shut out the Reds behind another mesmerizing performance by Carlos Zambrano. Plus he even had 3 hits! Does this superstar do it all or what? Derek Lee (11) popped a 2-run shot late to give his team an added cushion. 2 runs was all the Cubs ace really needed.

After going 7 innings, Zambrano left the game with 6 K's to his totals and allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks. He cruised to his 14th win and felt little effect after bouncing a line drive off his heel, which Aramis Ramirez bare-handed and threw out the runner at first. 13 hits is more like the Cubs lineup is capable of producing on a regular basis. Going through the order at least 5 players had 2 or more hits a piece. I like their chances when they can pull together such hitting showcases. Pagan's 2-run single up the middle in the 9th drew many cheers from fans and the dugout.

Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot, and Koyie Hill are seeing extra playing time and they're making the most of it. Sure Hill or Fontenot didn't get a hit yesterday, but their experiences on the field are invaluable. That play Mike made to end the game along the infield was incredible! Shades of a young Ryno is his prime. Today the Cubs start the series with the Phillies as Ted Lilly (11-4) returns to the mound to face Cole Hamels (11-5). The matchup looks to shape up for a close game in a real pitcher's duel. Cub offense don't fail me now!

Cubs falter in Series finale, but take 2-of-3

Last night in St. Louis there was nothing in the making for a Cubs victory. The Cardinal bats tore up Cubs pitching in a 11-1 romp. Too many homers and extra base hits were given up. Former Cardinal, Jason Marquis' appearance wasn't what Cub fans had hoped for in an attempt at a sweep. With the Brewers' loss Thursday night the Cubs missed a spot to gain extra ground in the division. *Check out this cool MLB Cubs blog for more news and updates: Bleeding Blue

The 7 hits didn't amount to much for the Cubs as Braden Looper took control for 7 innings. Jason Kendall did pick up 2 hits in the game. The Cubs stranded 8 runners on base, which absolutely killed their chances. Derek Lee hit a solo homer, serving as the lineup's only run. This club is still moving in the right direction and his made tremendous progress in the last 2 months.

I don't know what the deal is with Kerry Wood now or Wade Miller. Speculation going on around the franchise claims Wood is better than ever. At this point who really cares? The Cubs should've traded him a few years back when they had a chance to get good talent in exchange for him. The rotation with Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, and Marshall is pretty solid. Another good southpaw though would definitely help. Starting today the Cubs see the Reds for another 3-game bill as Rich Hill (6-6 3.58 ERA) takes the ball against Bronson Arroyo (4-11 4.58 ERA)

Zambrano triumphs to 13th win, Cubs take Game 1 against Cards

Back on the road the Cubs fared well last night in St. Louis for the first game of the a 3-game series. They edged the Cardinals 4-3 behind another notable pitching performance by Carlos Zambrano. He has no doubt been on a roll the past month! If the Cubs ace stays hot like this he could very well become a 20- game winner. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.

Aramis Ramirez went 4-for-5 with an RBI. Derek Lee returned to the team and punched out 2 hits. Called up from Triple A Ronny Cedeno made a couple plate appearances and had a hit. Also Ryan Dempster returned to his role as closer and collected his 17th save Tuesday night. The Cubs need him to stay healthy and close out tight games similar to last night. Nipping at the Brewers' heels Chicago is only 3 games behind them. Lilly (10-4) takes the mound tonight opposite Wainwright (9-7). Come on Milwaukee drop a couple games!

Cubs drop 2-of-3 against D-backs ending hot streak

The run was nice while it lasted, but like all good things for this franchise they eventually come to an end. Then again hope isn't lost on the season. There is plenty of baseball left until the fall. Sean Marshall (4-4 L) gave a valiant effort, pitching 6 innings Sunday and yielding a run on 5 hits. He struck out 5 in the 3-0 loss.

What was the deal with the lineup? They must have been tired and worn out. The lineup had just 4 hits. Off days like yesterday are normal, but the Cubs can't experience too many rolling into August because that's when the tension will elevates and they're got to rise to the challenge. All in all the club is in good shape, preserving a 51-46 record.

Starting today the Cubs are on the road for a big 3-game series with the Cardinals before traveling to Cincy to face the Reds. They need to keep their lead over their NL Central rivals and try to push past the Brew Crew. Lou will have to find way to get more at-bats for Jason Kendall (more him to the no. 2 or 5 spot in the lineup). Derek Lee is set to return to the lineup Tuesday, which ought to give the team a big lift on offense. The series in St. Louis should be quite entertaining. Go for the sweep Cubs!

Saturday, July 21

Cubs drop 1-run game at Wrigley

Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field wasn't all that pleasant for the home team. Tied at 2 in the 7th inning with the Diamondbacks the Cubs bullpen gave up the go ahead run from a solo homer. Aramis Ramirez had an opportunity to tie or put the Cubs ahead in the 8th instead grounded into an inning ending double play. Oh well, they're still close to the Brewers and can very well catch them next week.

The Cubs were rolling on a nice streak at home, I think 7-1 in the last 8 games there. Lou is become calm over the course of a few weeks and really has this franchise playing winning baseball. So much pressure is riding on him not only the players and as a veteran manager he's responded well. Yet I'm always amuse when he comes stomping onto the field, flings his hat, and kicks dirt while giving the umpires an ear full! As a true Cubs fan you're got to enjoy that whether they're winning or losing. Still the Cubs until September have to bear down and go on runs to make the second half interesting. Go Cubs!

Thursday, July 19

Cubs stomp Giants 12-1

The level and energy the Cubs are playing at now is astounding. They finally appear to be serious about winning. With the franchise already announced to be sold at the end of the season the guys in the clubhouse aren't thinking about that. Koyie Hill had a huge game yesterday at Wrigley with two doubles and 5 RBIs. Production of this nature is always welcomed. Jacque Jones busted out his slump with a hit, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs. Derek Lee hit a solo homerun.

I can't believe how far the starting pitching has come. Carlos Zambrano cruised to his 12th win after pitching 5 quality innings of shutout ball. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 batters. This club is really in the zone. Their chances are looking better each day in the Central. Eventually the Cardinals and Reds will start playing more up to par, but until then the Cubs need to keep putting up the pressure. Lilly (9-4) takes the ball today for an afternoon start against the Giants' Matt Morris (7-5).

Tuesday, July 17

Ramirez' double late seals comeback

The Cubs resume their winning ways with 4 consecutive wins after last night's close contest at Wrigley Field. Barry Bonds didn't play Monday night as he took his recovery day. Rich Hill played a good game, collecting his 6th win behind 8 innings of 4-hit 2-run pitching. He allowed a homer to Pedro Feliz early and not much afterwards. Aramis Ramirez was the hero with the huge 2-run double in the 8th to pull them ahead.

I don't know how long the Cubs can keep this stellar play up, although they're clearly making strides towards the postseason. Management took a big step yesterday by acquiring Jason Kendall from the Oakland Athletics. They traded catcher Rob Bowen and minor league lefty Jerry Blevins to get the veteran All-Star catcher. This was a smart move and good deal for the Cubs. They didn't have a permanent catcher after Barrett left. Now they have another solid arm on defense and hitter.

For a while the franchise seemed dead set on dealing away Jacque Jones. He's struggled for a while at the plate and is desperately trying to snap out of his drought. If the Cubs had to they could trade him, but who could they get in exchange? Why Griffey's name was ever mentioned in trade talks is beyond me. That was just completely unrealistic. The main goals at present are jumping ahead of the Brewers and reaching .600. These are very attainable and I know the Cubs can do it.

P.S. Cub fans if you missed it be sure to check out the special broadcast on HBO: Wait 'Til Next Year.

Cubs nip Astros 7-6, complete sweep at home

What a weekend for the Chicago Cubs! They took care of business at Wrigley serving up a series of long balls and handed their NL Central rivals a sweep. Way to go Cubs! Standing at 47-43 they're a mere 3 games out of first. The Brewers play the D-backs starting tonight (which is a real favorable series for them). Yesterday's action featured a 3-run shot by Derek Lee who reached base in all 4 plate appearances.

Also with homers were Angel Pagan's 2-run shot (4) and Ryan Theriot's (2) solo homer which was the difference in the game. The lineup tore up Astros' pitching in the 2nd with 6 runs then only scratched out a run for the rest of the game. That doesn't matter when they win. Jason Marquis experienced another down game after lasting 4 innings, but the bullpen picked up the slack and did a great job in Game 3 of the series. Kudos to them for their vast improvement from months past.

Tonight the Giants are in town for a 3-game bill with all the attention centered around Barry Bonds. I'm sure he'll get at least one homerun, although I don't care what he does as long as the Cubs take the series. They've got to keep the pressure riding on the Brewers. Chicago is a more experienced club who's persistence and leadership personas look to have a lasting effect on their success. I'd like to see the Cubs outperform the 11-hit performance they put together Sunday afternoon. It's about time for Jacque Jones to heat up. Soriano and him make a nice touch in the outfield. Note to Rich Hill: Don't give Bonds anything to hit...give him some chin music if you have to today.

Zambrano dominates Astros in route to a 6-0 shutout

Wow, the Cubs haven't lost their touch coming out of the break. In fact they're playing with great poise like a club on a mission. What a fantastic gem Carlos Zambrano hurled against Houston. They couldn't muster a run on him through 6.3 innings, only managing 3 hits. Big Z finished with 7 strikeouts. As the summer heats up so does Carlos. This man is on point with his location and velocity.

Derek Lee hit a 2-run double late to seal the deal for the Cubs. Soriano, Theriot, DeRosa, Floyd, and ZAMBRANO all had 2 hits a piece as the lineup crunched out 12 total hits. When one player performs well from from an offensive and defensive standpoint it rubs off on teammates. That seems to be the case here. Bob Howry came in the 9th to nail down the door. The Cubs stand at 45-43, inching closer to the Brewers.

Unfortunately, there is bad news for Chicago fans as Felix Pie was called down to Triple A and Jacque Jones was announced as the primary starting centerfielder. I'm not so sure this was a wise move...anyway if the Cub bats resume the good contact at the plate they shouldn't have any problems. I push for the Cubs to have a productive homestand! Make the most of this hot streak and KEEP WINNING!

Soriano, Lee make All-Star game interesting late

The Cub bats made their presence felt at the 78th All-Star game in San Francisco. In the 9th inning with the NL down 5-2 Alfonso Soriano slugged an opposite field 2-run shot with 2 outs. J.J. Hardy and Derek Lee (1-for-2) both walked to bring up the Phillies' Aaron Rowand. Unfortunately he couldn't get a hit or reach base and the NL lost 5-4. It was a thrilling game, going down to the final out. Ichiro (All-Star MVP) made history with the first inside the park homerun! I'm happy at least 2 Cub players made the All-Star team.

Next year I look for Zambrano to be there in rare form as usual. At the break Chicago is only 4 games in back of the Brewers. With the festivities and all the last few days hopefully everybody has got a chance to rest and return to play fully recuperated. I think Alfonso Soriano should've been in the homerun Derby. I watched most of the event and actually had picked Vladmir Guerrero to win it...and he pulled it off! Just the same though I would have rooted for Lee or Soriano if they'd participated.

After 2 additional off days the Cubs are set to play the Astros, Giants, Diamondbacks at home before going on another road trip to finish out July. With the offense in full swing this club is going to be okay until they get into August. Then they'll have buckle down and beat some stiff competition. I forward to what awaits in the latter part of the season. Get that rest in while you can Cubs!

Cubs enjoy break after uplifting road trip

The Cubs still look fresh and optimistic about the second half. They get a break for the All-Star festivities which start today after taking 1-of-2 from the Pirates. A few Cub faces should appear in the All-Star game. Derek Lee will be present for sure. Experiencing a resurgence month of June the Cubs are well on their way to climbing atop the division. Seeing the bullpen work effectively in the past 3 weeks has been a pleasant surprise.

How about the production brewing from the lineup? These guys have made a big transition since the opening of the season. The consistency at the plate seems to finally be there. Cub fans have long awaited for such offense. Ramirez and Lee lead the team in batting average, homeruns, and RBIs. The prospects, Fontenot and Theriot had faired extremely well in June and appear to be heating up for July. Their bats can help the Cubs inch out close games.

Lilly's last start was great! He's 8-4 with an ERA under 3.30. Zambrano, Marquis, and Marshall have showcased excellent performances on the mound as well. Keeping the runs allowed per game will be pivotal for the starting pitchers. Having the bullpen rested is vital too. I'd like to see more appearances from Ryan Dempster though because he hasn't got enough chances to showcase his best stuff. I look forward to seeing him nail down several games in the coming months. Enjoy the break Cubs and come back ready to pounce!

Cubs down Nationals 4-2

The road trip so far has been a success. They took 3-of-4 from the Nationals and the pitching is held up well. Last night Aramis Ramirez and Mike (3 hits) supplied most of the offense. Ramirez also made a great bare-handed play at third base. Will Ohman got his first win coming on in middle relief after Sean Marshall exited in the 6th inning. The Cubs move to 43-41, which is okay at the time being. A sweep at Pittsburgh would give them an extra boost.
*Read what this Cub's fan had to say about the game last night.

This Chicago club has played with passion and intelligence ever since Lou got suspended. His emotion seemed to jolt an energy or vigor in the players. They're lucky to finish up the first half against less challenging competition. With performances similar to what Daryl Ward's 2 hit 2 RBI night against Washington. He filled in nicely in place of Derek Lee. Bob Howry also got his 4th save.

If the bullpen continues to get the job done in middle relief the Cubs can probably jump into first place. They'll want to gain as much ground in the Central as possible moving into August. The Reds, Cardinals, Pirates, and Astros are playing mediocre baseball now so it's time to take control. Sweet Lou I'm sure will try out a few hitting strategies moving into the series with the Pirates at PNC Park. Then the All-Star festivities will get underway.

Cubs look to make short run, beat Nats 3-1

Those of little faith have no idea how the season will eventually turn out for the Chicago Cubs nor do Cub fans for that matter. One thing is for certain, this franchise has a good mix of talent and experience. I see this team headed in the right direction despite what anyone else thinks. Yesterday Carlos Zambrano pitched yet another sterling game and recorded is 10th win. Unfortunately, he got snubbed from making the All-Star game (few pitchers have matched his performance in June).

On the road the Cubs have played better recently and are now 2 games over .500. This is a big deal for the club because normally they're digging a hole for themselves while being around 10-15 games out of first. Ryan Theriot and Cliff Floyd drove in the 3 runs, which was plenty for Zambrano who last 6.2 innings allowing a run on 3 hits and 4 walks. Alfonso Soriano chipped in with 2 hits in the lineup. This guy is really scored some runs in the past 2-3 weeks! Cub fans ought to see more of this after the All-Star break.

Rich Hill (5-5) is throwing today as the game has already got underway and the Cubs are trailing 1-0 after 2 innings. Matt Chico (3-5) made the start for the Nationals. This is a perfect opporuntity for the Cubs to get another sweep before taking their chances in Pittsburgh. If Ramirez, Lee, and Soriano continue to thrive only good things will happen. Keep up the scoring Cubs!

Monday, July 2

Theriot and Lee do the damage offensively as Cubs beat Brewers 5-1.

A day after the Cubs had their 7-game win streak broke up they came positive in Game 3 vs. the Brewers and won 5-1 at Wrigley Sunday afternoon. Jason Marquis cruised to his 6th win pitching 7 innings and giving up a run on 4 hits and a walk. The offense gave him all the run support needed. Derek Lee and Ryan Theriot had 3 hits a piece, scoring all 5 runs. Aramis Ramirez drove in 2 runs. The Cubs go back to .500 and have to put the heat on the rest of the division.

The way the Brew Crew is playing Chicago is lucky to have took the series 2-of-3. One more week precedes the All-Star break. 2nd place is good for the Cubs now, but going on another short run got really give them great momentum heading into the second half. On the schedule for this week they'll see the Nationals and Pirates on the road. This is a favorable 5 game stretch for the Cubs. Oh yeah, I'm pulling for Zambrano and Ramirez to make the All-Star team. They both deserve to get selected.

Ramirez walk-off blast seals comeback win

The winning streak remains in tact as the Cubs came back from a 5-0 deficit yesterday at Wrigley. Trailing most of the game the Cub bats sprung into action in the 8th and 9th. Getting that runner on ahead of Ramirez was huge. This group looks like a totally different team. Everybody is hitting well without any apparent slumping in the lineup. Soriano slapped 2 more hits in Friday's game. Rich Hill pitched just 3 innings as the bullpen took over and Bob Howry obtained his 5th win in middle relief.

Aramis went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. I knew he'd have a big impact with his return to the lineup. Such production is always welcomed and needed. Maybe now during the 7th inning stretch at home the guest conductors won't have to yell, "Let's get some runs" as often. I hope to catch some of the game today as Ben Sheets (9-3) squares off with Sean Marshall (4-2). It's suited up to be a good pitcher's matchup. Can't wait to see what happens. Way to go Cubs!!

Zambrano wheels and deals as Cubs are hot, hot, hot!

I have liked what I've seen this week from the Cubs as a entire club. Everybody is contributing in some form or another. Carlos Zambrano delivered again, recording his 9th win with a 6-inning 5-hit and 2-run showcase which included 8 strikeouts. His K totals are steadily rising with each start. How about the offense? These guys have put in the hours in BP and it shows! Mike Fontenot has been the man of late as he hit his 3rd homer and went 3-for-4 last night in the 6-4 win over the Rockies.

Mark DeRosa supplied a 3-run shot in the 3rd off Hirsh. The low 6 hits usually wouldn't have sufficed yet Zambrano and the bullpen kept the Cubs in the game. Ohman, Marmol, and Dempster have been handy relievers in mid-to late innings. This team will need more of the same in the second half of the season. At 38-39 the Cubs are on the verge of breaking .500 and they can gain ground in the division by taking the upcoming series with the Brewers starting tomorrow.

Rich Hill (5-5) starts Friday against the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo (1-0) in Game 1. I like the Cubs chances if they can contain Prince Fielder and get to Ben Sheets in Game 2. The hitting is looking good the Cubs just need to keep it up.

Cubs win 5th straight, down Rockies 8-5

Nearing the end of the June the Cubs are playing their best baseball of the season. Winners of the last 5 games, good fortune seems to finally be falling in their lap. The big comeback on Monday night at Wrigley (correction from early post: Cubs are in for a homestand series with the Rockies and Brewers; not on the road). When the bullpen looked to have nearly gave the game away the lineup came roaring back with big hits from Fontenot and the game-winning single from Alfonso Soriano. The superstar is smoking at the plate! Man, did the Cubs need his hitting.

The 8-5 win last night showed more of the same as Soriano delivered with 2 hits, 2 runs, and a stolen base. Cliff Floyd slugged a 2-run homer and Koyie Hill had a big 2-run double late to wrap the game up. These prospects recently called up are showing great potential and will only get better as the season rolls along. I'm was impressed with Sean Marshall last year and am glad to see the sharp hitting from the rest of the guys getting their chance to play in Majors.

11 hits did the job against Colorado last night behind another good performance by Ted Lilly (6-4). He went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks. Things still look in the Cubs favor as tonight Carlos Zambrano (8-6) coming off a outstanding pitching gem takes the mound vs. the Rockies' Jason Hirsh (3-6). Cubs shoot for back-to-back sweeps. Yeah, let's do it. Wooooooooo!!

Cubs sweep Sox, Soriano homer adds emphasis

At the last a sweep happened for the Cubs...they got a big break in this weekend's Interleague Series against the White Sox. Everything is running smooth as the starting pitching and bullpen had really turned their performances up a notch. Plus Alfonso Soriano is on a tear. He hits 3 homers in the series, pushing his total to 15. Aramis Ramirez's bat has gave the Cubs are lift. He's a valuable guy on the club.

The 3-0 shutout showed how the pitching is starting to fall in place. Sean Marshall moved to 4-2 after a six-inning sensational outing. The bullpen and him held the Sox to 7 hits and only walked 3 batters. Soriano went 3-for-5 with an RBI while Ramirez sliced 2 hits. Even the young catcher, Koyie Hill drove in a run. They all looked sharp.

I knew the Cubs could move up in the standings after this weekend. They're still got to stay in tune as they continue the road trip. Watch out for those Rockies! Coach Piniella did or said something to set his team straight and whatever it was it has worked so far. First place in the Central can be the Cubs by the All-Star break. It's theirs for the taking.

Zambrano's 12 Ks overpowers Sox in Windy City contest

What a thrilling game I missed yesterday in Chicago! Carlos Zambrano dazzled and delivered as only he can in a Cubs uniform. He's been hot in his last 3 starts and proved for sure there was nothing wrong with his arm in the Cubs 5-1 win Friday afternoon. Zambrano went to 8-6 after going 8 innings while surrendering a mere run on 3 hits and a walk. Man, Big Z was dealing against the Sox. He's sure made them look bad on a variety of sliders and fastballs.

With the win the Cubs improve to 33-39. Aramis Ramirez made his a much anticipated return to the lineup and supplied the power. Him and Alfonso Soriano (13) jacked the ball into the seats beyond left and right field. Felix Pie even got in the act with a 2-run single. When the Cubs hit for power they usually manufacture ample runs and it was more than efficient for Zambrano. Somehow the strong right-hander's mind set has changed for the better. He seems more focused and determined unlike in previous months. 7 hits was all it took to take care of the White Sox, who luckily for the Cubs are struggling right now.

Taking the series at U.S. Cellular Field will be a big plus and boost to the Cubs. Ryan Dempster should get a few more save chances, he added another one to his total yesterday. The Cubs will face two hot teams in the Rockies and Brewers coming up on the road trip. If Soriano and Pie keep hitting well the club can at least reach the .500 mark. They ought to take full advantage of the poor play from the rest of the competition in the Central. Go Cubs!

Cubs drop historic game, 7-3 to Rangers

With all the attention surrounding former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa it was evident no one cared much about the actual outcome...well except fans like me. I had wanted Sosa not to hit his 600th career homerun against the Cubs, but as luck normally has it the shot heard around baseball was imminent. The 7-3 loss certainly didn't help the Cubs in the division. If the Brewers gain a big lead they may very well run away with the division...I can't believe I just said that.

The 2 hits from Lee and 3-for-4 efforts by Soriano weren't enough to save the Cubs. A few guys in the lineup had an off-night. 8 total hits can't get the job done unless the starting pitching holds up for extended innings. Marquis lasted 5 innings yielding 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. This wasn't a bad outing for the right-hander yet when the lineup is stumped in late innings the game is pretty much over. The bullpen did well for the most part just giving up a run.

No doubt about it the 2 errors cost the Cubs a few runs. Defense will be a major contributing factor to Cub wins in close games. What I'm having a hard time understanding is why the Cubs decided to trade Michael Barrett for virtually two nobodies! Sure I know why he was traded (the spats with teammates), but he had 9 homers and 29 RBIs. The Cubs dealed him away to the Padres for backup catcher Rob Bowen and a minor league outfielder. Again as in the past, what in the blue hell was Cubs management thinking??

Now, suddenly they're interested in Ken Griffey Jr. Of course this would be a great addition to the franchise, however what makes them think they have the money or if Griffey will even waive his no-trade contract. I'd love to see Griffey in a Cubs uniform, but honestly what is the real possibility this could happen? While management is cleaning out some of the roster they might as well finally say so long to Kerry Wood and maybe Prior too. They've been a complete waste of money the last couple of years. Get rid of them while you can, Jim Hendry! Forget about the Griffey trade because I don't see it happening, look elsewhere...say Houston or Atlanta. The main goal is winning no matter how it happens...Cub fans want to see a contender!

Cubs expected to be rejuvenated after day off

With the schedule day off Monday the Cubs' arms and lineup ought to be well rested. I don't know what kind of offense fans will see from the lineup tonight against the Rangers. The Cubs will have gut out the road trip and make at least a dent. The guys like Barrett, Jones, and DeRosa must be active hitters. This early count swinging nonsense has to stop. Getting runners on base...AND driving them in is key.

Marshall gets the start oppose to the Rangers' Tejeda (5-3). The young lefty has shown well in recent performances and definitely must have adequate run support. Everybody needs to do their part: the lineup, middle relief, and closer. If not the Cubs will experience their 3rd straight loss. They should be over .500 at this point instead of under. This team has got way too much talent going to waste. Lou Piniella will have to be a charge into this club again to spring them into action and move on to winning ways.

Cubs knocked around in 11-3 loss to Padres

Emotion in the air at Wrigley was apparent this weekend. A day after Derek Lee and Padres' pitcher Chris Young were ejected for fighting, the Cubs had no answers against their NL opponents. Carlos Zambrano pitched a near no-hitter on Saturday, but tragically picked up the loss. It's funny because in the heat of the moment the Cubs ace will do almost anything. Footage showed him fired up and ready to defend his teammate, but after the game he allegedly said, "I'm glad no one got hurt."

Rich Hill dropped to 5-5 with today's game outcome. He only pitched 3 innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits. No one was hitting in the Cubs lineup. They had 9 total hits and missed much need run production. Lee is suspended for a couple games and will serve them soon. A week ago this club looked to be getting on track, but they don't seem to have actually have their heads in the game all the time.

I'm not sure what's going on with all these recent MLB beanings and fights, but the Cubs can't let their emotions effect their ability to perform up to par. They'll see the Rangers and White Sox for two Interleague series before returning home to face the Rockies for a 3-game bill. If they don't bring the bats or the power I don't see them having much of a fun road trip. The Cubs desperately need Aramis Ramirez now. He's a key component in the offense. Come on Cubs, make rallies late if necessary!

Cubs take 2-of-3 from M's

Sure the home series with Seattle wasn't the most exciting games the Cubs have played this season, but they were historic. The 5-2 victory Thursday showed the Cubs out hitting the visitors 12-3 as Soriano went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Cliff Floyd punched out 3 hits and Izturis drove in 2 runs. Bob Howry (3-3) entered the game in the 7th and recorded the win. The Cubs badly needed to take a series.

At the moment in today's game they're up 1-0 against the Padres. Chicago will see them for a 3-game series and should get should good cuts in on their pitching staff. I can't wait for Aramis Ramirez to returns. Cubs definitely need his bat. Well, it looks like Alfonso Soriano and D. Lee are heading to the All-Star Game. They both deserve being selected. Meanwhile, the Cubs can focus on making some sort of decent run before the break. Winning the majority of their home games is all important because they'll face tough teams on the road. We'll see how they respond.

Wednesday, June 13

Cubs drop close one in extra innings to M's

I got so amped up for this Interleague series with the Mariners at Wrigley since it marks the first time ever the two teams have faced off. Last night, unfortunately luck shifted to the visitors side as the Cubs didn't push across a run in 5 consecutive innings and and lost the game in the 13th. Rich Hill pitched a fine game and it sure sucks when the lineup doesn't give him sufficient run support. The inability to execute in the clutch often has been the story for the Cubs since April.

The main source of offense came from Derek Lee and Michael Barrett. Both had 2 hits and a piece with 2 RBIs. Their production alone couldn't compensate for the 5-3 deficit the ball club found themselves in extra innings. Consistency is still an area this team must really work to improve. They're lost too many close games in the first half of the season. The young guys, Pie and Fontenot punched out one hit each and showcase great potential. The lost fell to Will Ohman (0-4), who entered the game in extra innings. Hill went 6.2 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits and a walk.

As far as a production standpoint the Cubs were only out hit 14 to 12, but it was Jose Guillen's homer in the 3rd which keep the M's ahead for most of the game. Aramis Ramirez' absence is hurting run production for the lineup and with him now being on the 15-day DL other guys have to assume bigger roles on the team. Keeping Soriano and Pie back-to-back in the lineup as often as possible is the best strategy Lou can take in my view.

Finding more at-bats for Cliff Floyd and Jacque Jones is still in question. Those two veterans have the power and the Cubs can definitely use their bats in key situations off the bench. Hopefully 'Ole Lou will know what to do. Let's take 2-of-3 from the M's!

Cubs blow chances and game to closeout series in Atlanta

Another breakdown or as I'd like to think, offensive shortage occurred Sunday night at Turner Field. With 6 outs left Ryan Dempster entered the game and couldn't hold a 4-2 lead. Well, the closer can't be perfect each time and the lineup didn't provide enough insurance runs. Soriano's sac fly in the 5th to put the Cubs ahead then Derek Lee had a chance to drive in runs with runners in scoring position late in the game, but grounded out to short. The whole incident in the 1st inning was absurd.

I'm not sure why the home plate umpire reacted with an automatic ejection after Lilly hit Edgar Renteria with a pitch up and in. Who knows if it was intentional or not? Usually a warning is issued to both dugouts instead deciding to toss the pitcher. Plus the umpire took a while to make this decision. What the hell was his problem? Lilly got robbed of a start! It was a clear there was conflict between both teams in this series. Still umpires don't need to jump to conclusions. If another incident occurred then action should be took.

The bullpen did okay until Dempster entered the game in the 8th. He's just wasn't able to shut down the Braves' hitters. At least some good news came from Game 4. Prospect second baseman, Mike Fontenot hit his first Major League homerun while adding a triple with 2 RBIs. It stinks the rest of the lineup couldn't produce more than 2 runs. Looking forward to tonight's game, Carlos Zambrano (6-5) takes the hill against the Astros' Woody Williams (2-8) in Chicago. I would like to think the Cubs will be focused and pay no attention to any trade rumors circulating in MLB. Let rebound tonight Cubs before gearing up for the exciting series vs. Seattle!

Soriano's 3 homers drives Cubs to 9-1 victory

Friday night's game in Atlanta couldn't have concluded with much better results. The pitching, both starting and the bullpen was superb as well as the offense. What has got into Alfonso Soriano? The slugger launched 3 dingers last night, all of solo variety. He finished with 4 hits, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Finally Cub fans are seeing the star put up big numbers! It's only a matter of time before he broke out.

To compliment the lineup's efforts Sean Marshall pitched one heck of a game and went on to collect his second win after going 6 innings. The young southpaw only totaled 1 earned run to his credit. What solid back-to-back performances from the Cubs young guns! The club could really benefit with a sweep against the Braves before facing Houston for 1 game then jumping back into Interleague Play.

I can't wait to see the long awaited Mariners, Cubs series. This marks the first time in history the two teams have played each other in the regular season. Seattle is my favorite AL team (Although Ken Griffey Jr. is no longer there he played a big part in my rooting choice). The best aspect of this series is it will be played at Wrigley Field.

The game last night was filled with great efforts all-around. The lineup hit that magic number of 5 early and I knew they were in the clear. 15 hits were crunched out by the lineup with everyone except the pitcher having at least 1 hit. Everyone is booming about Soriano, but how about FELIX PIE? He's been impressive from the start. He delivered with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. This guy is the real deal and deserves every chance possible to be in the lineup. The veterans like Floyd now more than ever have to prove themselves. I think it's okay to have Murton, Pagan, and Floyd come off the bench most of the time. Of course, they are entitled to some starts too.

Jason Marquis (5-2) goes to the mound tonight and squares off against Braves ace, Tim Hudson (6-4). This ought to be a real pitcher's gem with the game being decided by 1 or 2 runs. Then again it may very well turn out to be a slugfest. In the Cubs favor, it would be nice to see them knock Hudson around a bit and get out to an early lead. Piniella is focused on setting goals, one being a top spot in the division. With another win the Cubs can make it 4 straight. Let's go Cubs!

Thursday, June 7

Zambrano returns to rare form, Cubs blow past Brewers 6-2

A fuse was lit and seems to have fired up the Cubs ace. After the heated nonsense incident in the Cubs dugout and clubhouse over the weekend, Carlos Zambrano put his energy to good use. Going 6.2 innings Wednesday night at Miller Park he allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks with 9 strikeouts. If Carlos is injured he's doing one hell of a job of fooling everybody. It was probably personal issues bothering him, nothing to do with his mechanics.

Felix Pie hit a three-run homer, going 3-for-5 in the game with 3 runs scored. I think only good things will happen for the offense when Soriano and Pie are in the lineup. The Cubs are in dire need of such speed on the base paths. I think it's a good idea to have the young outfield prospect leading off and have Alfonso in the no. 2 hole. I've said it a few times before the star slugger will be more productive at this spot.

The bullpen is looking much improved from previous weeks. I think I'm sold on the idea of having Carlos Marmol enter the game in middle relief. He's been effective, which is all that matters. Ryan Dempster was great last night too. He spread goose eggs on the scoreboard in the 9th. Everything went well until Aramis Ramirez left the game with a strained knee after reaching on an error at first base in the 2nd inning. This sounds minor and shouldn't cause him to miss no more than 2 or 3 games if that.

Well, it looks as if Zambrano has his head and focus back in the game. Apparently, Michael Barrett and him have made amends. I'm amazed at this guy. He has a prior bad start then rebounds with a sound pitching performance for his 6th win plus comes through with 2 hits and a RBI! Few pitchers in the league can hit and pitch this well. The Cubs need such an advantage on the club all season. They're only 6.5 games in back of first in the scuffling Central. It's so important that they make a run before the All-Star break. At that point it won't be a time to slouch behind. I look for further progress in the upcoming series at Turner Field.

Soriano's 3-run bomb propels Cubs to 7-2 win

Surviving a disastrous weekend the Cubs set their minds on achieving goals. One of those goals was to not again become the laughing stock of the NL. The organization received good and bad news on Monday. Due to his behavior and actions at Wrigley on Saturday Lou Piniella was suspended an additional 3 games by Commissioner Selig. This makes a total of 7 games the Cubs will be without their skipper. Well, he's already eat up 1 or 2 games so far so it's not as bad. I still can't comprehend why Lou was hit with such a penalty when every baseball fan who's tuned in to ESPN has seen the antics from other ball club managers.

Actually the incident involving the Mississippi Braves minor league coach put all other ejections at the pro level to shame. I found it quite amusing really...with the flipping of the bases and the crawling toward the mound then heaving the roselin bag at the home plate umpire. What Piniella did was tame compared to that guy's actions. I'm sure old Lou regret his actions now and will put it past him.

Anyway, the Cubs have won two straight and last night Soriano delivered with 5 hits. His 3-run homer in the 7th gave the Cubs a comfortable lead. Carlos Marmol collected his first win behind 5 big innings of work by Jason Marquis who gave up an earned run on 7 hits and 3 walks. The best part I think was the lineup producing 12 hits for 7 runs. Of course they stranded 15 runners, but that doesn't matter when a team wins. A sharp turnover for the rest of June would be great. They'll see the Brewers for 2 more before traveling to Atlanta for 4-game series. The player issues and other distractions hopefully will vanish. Let's go Cubs!

Chaos erupts in Wrigleyville, Lou gives umpire an ear full!

If there is one of the worst times to be a Cubs fan, it's definitely now. With what happened this weekend in the Braves series at HOME I'm kind of ashamed to root for this club. With things already a mess, Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett had to lose their cool and fight. I'm a big Zambrano supporter and everyone knows he was unsatisfied in the previous inning with the pass ball and error, but throwing a punch at his catcher was wrong. Then the two got into it again the clubhouse!

No one really paid much attention to the game itself, it was more of a emotional free-for-all as Lou Piniella jolted from the dugout in the bottom of the 8th and contested a call at third base. He got in the third base umpire's face, yelling and kicking dirt...then in a classic move he kicked his hat after being ejected. It was a close play at third as Angel Pagan was called out, but it looked from one angle that his hand touched the bag just before the tag. The Cubs fiery manager was suspended indefinitely by MLB for his behavior on the field (I can't believe that...when did dirt hurt anyone?). The 5-3 loss makes 6 in a row for Chicago.

Normally I would provide stats of the game, but with all the turmoil and complaining going on it's too depressing to mention. Why the hell can't the players put aside their egos, conduct themselves like Major Leaguers and actually give a crap about winning?? Lou was right when he said guys need to start acting like Major Leaguers and he only has so many guys to put in the lineup everyday. People better not start turning on 'Ole sweet Lou and make him out to be the next Dusty Baker. He clearly is trying to fight for this franchise. Zambrano and Barrett need to put their differences aside, shut up, and play SMART, LEVEL-HEADED FREAKING baseball. Otherwise the Cubs will continue to endure hell.
