What a sigh of relief for Cub fans! The playoffs are no doubt in the Cubs' horizon. With a 6-0 shutout behind a pure gem by Carlos Zambrano the Cubs clinched the NL Central. To my surprise it only took 84 wins to wrap up the NL Central. Thanks in part to the Brewers' loss against the Padres last night it put the Cubs up 3 games, knocking the opposition out of playoff contention. I was starting to worry until they pulled off the victory, it appeared as if the division race would be decided in the last 2 games of the regular season. I'm sure glad that wasn't the case.
As far as the historic game, it was pertinent the offense delivered. That's what happened as both D. Lee and Soriano crushed homeruns while the rest of the lineup chipped in with clutch hits. This veteran bench and youthful mix of talent on the club is one of their top strengths. All that's on anyone's mind involved or following this franchise is they're headed to the postseason, oh yeah! This will mark the 3rd time in 7 years the Cubs will make a playoff appearance (Still can't get over the 1989 series against the Giants). The fellas can relax now and start to prepare for the intense action awaiting them this October.
My gut instinct told me Carlos Zambrano would bring his A game and steer this club in the right direction again. He went on to notch up his 18th win. Howry and Dempster combined for 2 scoreless innings Friday night allowing just 2 hits. These two final games with the Reds look to be a breeze now that the Cubs have clinched the playoffs. Lou should be given a lot of credit for his role in getting his team to be play with a boost in confidence. Can't wait until the postseason to catch the thrilling action. Congratulations to the 2007 Chicago Cubs on becoming NL Central Champions! Way to go!
