Smith and Dawson join elite group on Hall ballot

The Cubs franchise hopes to hear more good news in the New Year. Former Cubs, Andre Dawson and Lee Smith find their names on this year's ballot for the Hall of Fame. Being elected will be a moment for them to be cherish forever. They need a favorable majority vote of over 60% to get elected and join teammate Bruce Sutter. These guys wore Cub uniforms with pride and the fans adored them. Lee Smith compiled 478 career saves. He had the record until the Padres' Trevor Hoffman surpassed the mark back in September.

I know there are several respectable, presitigous names on the ballot. Honestly, I think if Jim Rice gets in so should Andre Dawson. Their careers were similar (both also never acquring a World Series title), they hit for power and had strong arms in the outfield. I remember footage on Dawson throwing out a runner at first on a bouncing single to right field. That was amazing, you never see that anymore! The Hawk also finished his career with over 500 dingers and 1,000 RBIs. That has to be weighed in while deliberating his entry into the Hall. Most likely, it will come down to a close difference for the former Cub stars. They'll still get a second chance on the next ballot if they don't get elected.

Soriano is now a Cub, what a blockbuster deal!

I'm absolutely stunned that the Cubs have signed Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year deal worth $136 million. First of all, bravo finally to management for having the brass to make this deal happen. I knew they were holding out for a long time. Parts of the puzzle are still being put together. This appears to be one of the lastest and greatest moves the Cubs have made this off-season. Jim Hendry understands his ass is on the line and has no choice to spend lucratively to acquire top market talent.

This franchise is now going in the right direction (after coping with 3 straight miserable seasons). I knew Lou Pinella was the best choice and right fit for this team. Also, it worked out well that Aramis Ramirez was able to come to terms on a new contract and not leave. So we have three star, top caliber players with Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano in the lineup, but who will be next to sign? Oh yeah, the Cubs traded and got Mark Derosa from the Indians like anybody cares. Personally, I don't think this guy will make a difference at second base. Cedeno and Theriot are okay for now, they're young and are still developing their skills. Plus Derosa isn't worth over 3 million a year.

Management keeps talking about filling another spot in the rotation, which includes Zambrano, Prior, and Miller, to give depth. What about Barry Zito? Sure he'll want a crap load of money, but what star pitcher of his quality doesn't? Strengthing the rotation won't be an area Cubs management can procrastinate on and be cheap with either. I don't know who is on the market or free agency right now, but I can't think of a better replacement than a strong-armed southpaw. They need at least one good lefty in the rotation. Hendry should keep wheeling and dealing this off-season until he pieces together an all-around masterful club.

Cubs hire Dejesus as managerial assistant

The news and efforts swirling around Chicago are positive this off-season. Snagging Lou Pinella was one of the best decisions this franchise has made in a long time. This week the Cubs filled another management position as they hired former player, Ivan Dejesus to be Pinella's coaching assistant. As Cub fans know, Dejesus is known primarily for being traded to the Phillies with Larry Bowa for Ryne Sandberg in 1982. He had been coaching in the minor league for the Houston Astros. I'm really unsure of how this deal will pan out for the Cubs. If Dejesus coaches anything like he used to hit (.254 career avg.) then it will best not to include him in on the offensive strategy.

I know this club is undergoing a major transition and having to find a new staff, but couldn't they have sought out a former player who was accustomed to excelling and being successful. I would think players like Mark Grace and Ryne Sandberg exhibit those qualities. Heck, Grace even won a World Series with the Diamondbacks (should've happened with the Cubs...damn '89 NLCS). Even if it wasn't a former Cub at least the new President, CEO could've done is located someone within baseball who has a proven track record. Management needs to think along the lines of quality rather than availability.

Next on the list of priortiies will be the players, who to keep, who to let go. I wouldn't mind seeing a new face over at shortstop or second base, God knows this team needs production from those positions. Merely finding a utility player to fill the spot won't cut it. Cub fans are tired of seeing hapless nobodies come to Chicago, unable to deliver when needed. I'll think about this DeJesus deal, but I don't think it will work out.

Final thoughts on 2006 season

The utter agony and torment for Cubs fans is over for a while. Ending 2006 when the season already began to crumple in April only made one wonder when the real turmoil would surface. Thanks to horrible records in consecutive years manager Dusty Baker and President Andy McPhail are gone. Whew! What a relief to get rid of such incompetent management. I realize Baker didn't have a full, healthy team this season and faced uncontrollable factors prior to his departure. However, the franchise, no matter the coach or owner they shouldn't accept losing.

Merely allowing the rest of year to "play out" and see what happens was unacceptable. Andy McPhail finally came to grips with reality, not helping this team return to postseason caliber or making smart investments in talent. (God, normally I wouldn't say this, but this guy should be beaten for trading Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for Csar I???) I wanted to know why the hell there was so much inaction by management when all season the Chicago Tribune and fans criticized them for such bad decision-making. I think an owner or President is worthless and not doing their job when they just rely on high attendance to carry a team through the season no matter how awful they perform.

With all the chaos within the organization the bright spots for the Cubs in the future are the young pitchers. Sure they're still maturing and learning the game, but are also going to give the Cubs a lift in the coming years (barring another dimwitted douchbag doesn't take over again). The guys like Rich Hill, Sean Marshall, and Juan Mateo are going to have more innings under their belts and will help the Cubs win close games. With another potent bat to join forces with Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez the offense will be in good shape.

This time around the Cubs will have to decide whether they want to spring out the big bucks or settle for yet another low-tier player that's nothing but dead weight. I can only pray that someone in power this off-season will know what the hell they're doing and resurrect this club.

Cubs finish '06 at the bottom of the NL, Baker terminated

Wow, what a truly crappy season this has been for the Chicago Cubs. Baring witness to the team's performance was enough to cause fans to drive a steak knife to their gut (Don't recommend doing this, that would be crazy and besides the season is over anyway). The Cubs, with what dignity if any they had left completed the season with a win over Colorado at home then as expected Dusty Baker was fired. The score was insignificant really because the Cubs record is so despairing. At 66-96 they finished with the worst record in the NL. This is such an embarrassment.

President, Andy McPhail has also followed Dusty out of the door. He finally accepted responsibility for his failures and resigned. To be fair I won't say everything that happened this year was his fault, but he wheeled the most power in the organization and didn't acquire the right talent before the trade deadline or in the off-season. The CEO was quoted as saying, "The McPhail o-meter has run down to 0." First of all, who the hell talks like that? (what a dork!) The last good move as I remember he made was trading for Aramis Ramirez 3 or 4 years ago. I hope GM Jim Hendry has learned something from this diastrous season. Much of the pressure and heat will be riding on him now.

I don't understand why the organization keeps waiting around to make a decision with Kerry Wood. He is not going to be the God Sent to the Cubs, so why risk wasting another year on him? The Cubs had around a $94 million payroll and guess who ate up $9-10 million? It doesn't make sense to pay a guy who doesn't even play for 2 months, especially in consecutive years. This so frustrating for Cub fans to watch year after year. In their search for a new leader, the organization needs to find a veteran who exudes poise, determination, and a proven track record for success. Don't allow any more indecisive, candy-ass buffons to take over this position in the future. Chicago and the fans have seen enough bullshit and demand satisfaction!

Cubs play extra innings with Colorado

To my surprise the Cubs and Rockies game has gone into extras (now in the 14th inning). Colorado has jumped on top 11-9 as they've bashed Cubs pitching for 4 homeruns. With all the heat on Dusty Baker it doesn't appear that he's offered his team any final words of inspiration. Being on the hot seat, anticipating word from the front office has got to bothering him. I understand Baker has to show up for the final 2 games, but really what is the point?

Today's game went into the 10th inning with a 9-9 tie. Juan Mateo got touched up big time as he didn't escape the 2nd, giving up 7 earned runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. The young guys will have to learn not to walk batters. It kills a pitcher in the long run. Jacque Jones, Juan Pierre, and Ryan Theriot made a nice contribution, but to no avail. The Cubs nearly emptied their bullpen of the young prospects. Walrond and Guzman came on to pitch in early innings, but couldn't shut down Colorado's offense.

Nothing in the whole season has gone the Cubs' way. Yeah my gut feeling was right...the Cubs lost 11-9 in 14 innings. The only good news for the day is Juan Pierre reached 200 hits for the fourth time in his career. Dusty must have caught wind of what I was discussing last week because he used Zambrano as a pinch hitter. He's finally come to the realization that Carlos does actually have a better average and on-base percentage than most of his bench players. The other day Carlos got screwed over in his last start. He pitched well enough to capture his 17th win, but it was those damn errors from his backup crew that sealed his fate.

I don't care what happens tomorrow in the final game because it's not like the Cubs have anything to prove. The screams and criticism from the fans should be alarming enough to send the message loud and clear to management. If these bozos in the front office can't see the big picture for next season then they need to start packing and get the hell out of Chicago!

Consecutive victories bring some happiness to Wrigley

Let it be known that the Cubs faithful support their team by coming out to the ballpark in massive numbers despite the team's record. After all the hell they've endured this season (much like many in the past) the fans continue to drive attendance at Wrigley Field. Why? My only guess is that they're crazed fanatics who don't mind shelling out the big bucks for season tickets. The Cubs wanted to make good on their final home series. They beat the Brew Crew 3-2 yesterday. The long ball did the job on Tuesday as the Cub bats came swinging as expected in route to a 14-6 romp.

To follow up on Tuesday's game, catcher Henry Blanco was the MVP of the game. He drove in 4 RBIs, going 4-for-5. Jacque Jones laced a 2-run shot in the 3rd inning and John Mabry hit a 3-run homer. The lineup combined for 18 total hits with Murton, Jones, and Blanco doing the most damage with at least 3 hits a piece. All these big run scoring affairs come at the tail end of the season when it doesn't matter. The most important aspect is the prospects get additional exposure and further learn how to play better in the Majors.

Despite winning the game at home yesterday it was a shame Rich Hill got a no-decision. Howry went to 4-5 as he took over in the 9th to close out the game. I still like what I'm seeing from the young guns: Marshall, Hill, and Mateo. They're only going to get better and it will help them significantly if they decent run support. The offense is where the main hole is with the Cubs. People have preached about this for years. 2002 they had extensive offense that could score enough runs. That must come back into play in the near future. Fans can only wonder how long it will take for this team to become a contender again.

No sparks fly for Cubs in Cincy

Another close game was played yesterday between the Reds and Cubs. I think every Cubs fan wants the season to come to an end. God should have mercy on the club. Being knocked off again 5-4. It was Ken Griffey's pinch-hit 3-run homer in the 8th that put Cincy on top to seal the win. The Reds have a glimmer of a chance yet to clinch the postseason (3.5 games out of division). Wade Miller again got shot down for first win and remains 0-2. He can't catch a break this year with the injury and all.

The Chicago lineup scraped out only 5 hits. No one got more than 1 hit besides Juan Pierre. These guys had given out months ago and have shown no real desire to win. Bronson Arroyo went 7 quality innings without allowing any earned runs yet didn't get the decision. With 5 games left on the schedule, who even knows if the Cubs care to win any of them here in the final week. It's been torture to watch this franchise crumple throughout the season and no one in the front office taking charge or handling responsibilities. I guess what can anyone expect out of brainless, incompetent hacks who aren't fit to run and manage professional sport teams?

Sean Marshall get another shot at collecting his 6th win as he squares off with the Brewers' Carlos Villanueva (1-1) at Wrigley Field tonight. If there is a time for the boys in the lineup to swing for the fences it's now. What else do they have to play for, fundamentals? Yeah, I know how well that turns out. So tee off into Waveland and Sheffield Avenue and give the loyal, die-heart fans a reason to cheer.

Cubs edged 3-2, Dempster blows save

Down to the final week, the Cubs played give-and-take with Cincinnati. Neither team seemed to care if they won or not. Battling on pitch after pitch, Royce Clayton got the game winning hit in the 9th off Scott Eyre to send the Reds to the locker room happy. It was a must win for the Reds as kept their slim hopes alive for the playoffs. I thought it was possible that the Cubs could somehow finish the year with 70 wins...that glimmer of optimism got shot down quick. The real unfortunate soul of today's game was Juan Mateo.

No matter how well this kid pitches or hangs in there until late innings the offense never has his back. That has to discouraging and frustrating for any pitcher, young or old. The only possible point worth mentioning about the lineup is Aramis Ramirez 37th homerun. I think he will pass several career marks in this club's history in the years to come. From the other side of the field, it was another horrible outing for Ryan Dempster who not only blew the save, but recorded his 9th loss of the season. I know the Reds were hungry to make a comeback and only needed a run to tie the game, but this inconsistency from the regular closer is down right pitiful.

What can Cub fans expect with the season nearing a close anyway I guess? If this franchise can't see the need for drastic changes and take action when they finish the year in last place then there is no chance of turning the club into a contender again. It would be in their best interest to start looking for available options to trade Kerry Wood. He's been dead weight the last 2 years and has wasted revenue. I still think Wood is talented and can serve a valuable role, but the Cubs have gave him enough chances and received very little in return. I think the whole rotation needs to restructured with the exception of Zambrano. Wade Miller can stay or go I really don't care (His also been injured for most of the year). Serious business decisions must be made in the off-season.

Cubs drop two straight against Phils

After a splendid long ball explosion earlier this week the Cubs young pitchers couldn't find any answers to shut down the Phillies offense. Another prospect fresh up from the minors, Les Walrond, got his first MLB start as a Cub Wednesday. He didn't fair so well. The lefty lasted 3 innings after giving up 3 hits, 2 earned runs, and 5 walks while striking out 6. I have no idea what Dusty didn't allow him to pitch longer. It's not like he had a high pitch count.

The two runs were accounted for by Aramis Ramirez and Scott Moore (2-for-3), the rest of the lineup was dismal. Usually if Aramis or Jacque doesn't do big damage the lineup doesn't score any more than 3 runs. That has been the story all season long. I'm glad the young prospects have getting valuable Major League experience, several making their debut this year. It's also a little comforting to know the franchise has good talent in the farm system who are beginning to blossom. If necessary they may need to trade some of these potential prospects.

With an off day the Cubs young arms will get some rest and relish the memory of their first Major League game. Then Chicago will finish out the rest of the season traveling on the road to face the Reds again before returning home to meet the Brewers and Rockies. Their chance to win 70 games are getting slim. The magic number is 8 and that will tough, coming down to the final 2 weeks. I say Dusty should let the rookies have their thrills and frills (If all goes well they'll learn how to play better).

Ramirez blasts ensure Cubs 11-6 victory

The Cubs have asserted themselves as spoilers in the NL. They've won 3 straight after handing the Phillies a devastating loss Monday night. The bats sprung to life again as Aramis Ramirez whaled 2 homeruns and finished with 7 RBIs. He's the sixth Cub player in history to hit 35 homeruns and 35 doubles in a season. I like to see the Cubs playing with heart, showing they won't be walked all over like a floormat yet I feel bad for the Phillies. Usually I wouldn't say this, but they honestly deserve to enter the postseason especially with the year Ryan Howard has put together.

Ramirez wasn't the only player to get in the homerun parade, prospect Scott Moore also cracked a solo homer in the 5th while the Phil's Jose Hernandez launched a grand slam in the 4th inning as a pinch hitter. Juan Pierre connected on his 3rd dinger of the year. The Cubs lineup cranked out 16 hits. That's more of what should happen next year. Needless to say, Sean Marshall didn't have a good outing. He went 3.1 innings and yielded 6 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. He's still developing and learning so I expect him to have rough starts here and then.

With the pressure mounting on teams in the wildcard race the Cubs have definitely put a small damper on the Phils and Reds playoff hopes. They'll see Philly for two more games to close the series. Today Wade Miller (0-1 6.75) pushes for his first win against Jamie Moyer (8-14 4.38) scheduled at 7:05 p.m ET. Whomever wins I'd like to see Ramirez continue to drive in runs and inch closer to 100 RBIs for the season. It's been a long time since any Cubs player has driven 10 runs in a game...why not tonight?

Jacque Jones smacks a 3-run homer off Eric Milton in the lst

Zambrano makes comeback, Cubs wallop Reds 11-3

The Friendly Confines was actually filled with happy Cub fans today as the long ball played a big part in the win. The lineup churned out 6 homers, scoring 6 runs in the lst inning. Again, I wouldn't have minded seeing the Reds taking this series since they're (or were) in the hunt for the wildcard. Cincy has got some serious catching up to do now. Overall it was a great day for the Cubs. The young guys, Murton, Theriot, and Cedeno had a big day. They slugged 4 homeruns combined and drove in 5 runs. With the win Chicago moves to 61-89 though still in last place in the Central.

Behind back-to-back superb pitching performances from Rich Hill and Carlos Zambrano the Cubs were able to grab 2-of-3 from Cincinnati. Yesterday Hill pitched a complete game shutout, totaling 10 strikeouts. After missing 2 starts because of a sore back Zambrano (15-6) returned to the rotation and wowed the Wrigley crowd with another gem. The Cubs ace pitched 7 innings, allowing 4 hits and 0 earned runs. He made his presence felt with 6 strikeouts and a solo homer. It's his 5th homerun of the season. I think next year Zambrano should be used as a pinch hitter as often as possible.

The offense pounded the ball today, which means they made the right adjustments at the plate yet they faced Eric Milton who had arm stiffness and wasn't his best today. It doesn't matter, either way a win is a win and I know this team will take whatever they can get until October. Derek Lee didn't attend the game Sunday because he had to tend to his ill daughter who's experiencing vision problem in one eye. Best wishes to Lee and his family. We all know he's had a rough summer. Before the Cubs leave for their final road trip they'll host the Phillies starting Monday. This is another team I think deserves to make the playoffs, which sucks that the Cubs have to play them now. Oh well, whatever happens will happen for a reason.

Cubs nip Dodgers 6-5

The series against the Dodgers ended on a positive note. Despite the ever growing number of injuries the Cubs grabbed 2-of-3. Aramis Ramirez did the damage yesterday, providing the power with a 3-run homer in the 7th off Brett Tomko. Ramirez has 33 dingers for the year. Wade Miller made his second start and proved to be effective through 5 innings. Despite getting a no-decision he only allowed 1 hit, but was credited with 2 earned runs. I'm happy the Cubs put pressure on the Dodgers this week. They can help the Giants and Padres out, spoiling Los Angeles chances of winning the pennant out west.

Luckily the Cub offense hit just well enough to beat the Dodgers as Pierre had 2 hits with a run scored as well as Ryan Theriot. It was Ramirez's homer that made the difference. Scott Eyre (1-2) entered the game in the 6th inning and was able to pick up the win. The bullpen has seemed to slacked off recently. They probably feel it's no need to pitch their best since the team isn't reaching the playoffs.
I can't say I blame them really, plus why risk an injury by throwing out your arm?

Under 20 games are left on the schedule. I'd like to see this club win 70 games, though I doubt it will happen. At least they can do is play the role of spoilers. Unfortunately, starting today they see the Reds for another 3-game series at home. Cincy is 5.5 games back in the Central and their chances are diminishing the wildcard. I still would like to see them in the playoffs. If anything Griffey deserves this opportunity so if Chicago loses 2 games it's no big deal to me. Sure, I'd like them improve their record yet they don't have a big incentive to play for now.

Tuesday, September 12

Cubs snap hapless drought, down Braves 8-3

The final visit to Atlanta was a total loss. The Cubs could at least enjoy Monday's victory. The lineup actually rocked John Smoltz for a change. I never understand how they can hit well off select quality veteran pitchers, but do zlich against other young, inexperienced starters. Derek Lee returned to the lineup and cranked 2 homeruns. He has 8 on the season, which is far cry from last season. I can only imagine what numbers he would've produced if he were healthy the whole year. Jacque Jones also chipped in with a 3-run shot.

Hats off to Rich Hill for a well pitched game. Going 5.2 innings Hill allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck 6 batters. I think this guy has a bright future ahead of him with the Cubs. Prospect Scott Moore was called up and got a chance to play yesterday. He came off the bench as a pinch hitter. He didn't get a hit, but it was a good learning experience for him. Maybe in the closing weeks he'll see more time as a starter along the infield. I don't see why the organization doesn't call up more promising talent from the minors to give them exposure in the Majors.

A rejuvenated, new lineup with more pop and consistency will compliment the young pitching staff next season if management makes the right moves in the off-season. Hill, Mateo, and Guzman have already shown they can go 5-7 innings without allowing the opposition to butcher the ball. Today the Cubs head back home to face the Dodgers for a 3-game series before the Reds come to town. Sean Marshall (5-9) gets the start as he counters Derek Lowe (14-8). No offense to Dodger fans, but I hope Nomar goes hitless (I could have wished for him to get injured, as a Cubs fan I'm beyond that).

Cubs fall 2-1 in good pitcher's duel

The road trip for the Cubs hasn't been fun. Being battered and bruised while allowing the Giants, Pirates, and Braves to made easy work of them shows that this team has lost the will to win any game. That don't care what place they finish or what their overall record will be at the end of the season. Misery must love company because everybody is having it rough on this team. The ppor young hurlers from Triple A can't seem to buy a win no matter how well they pitch. I know Derek Lee wants to play, but it's really irrevelant whether he's in the game or not. Seeing him play is great, but this late in the season it's not worth risking another injury.

Lee will hit his share of homers (especially on his birthday) consequently it'll be best if he saves his power for next year. Juan Mateo had another solid outing again, lasting 6 innings and being charged with 2 earned runs. When will these young guys catch a break? They pitch their best and can't collect a W or even see their win because the sagging-ass lineup. You never know when they come to play, they don't committ as a whole. With the Braves having a rare down year you'd think a woeful team like the Cubs could come into town and take control. I guess being sweep again isn't any surprise, since this is a much more frequent occurrence than them winning 6 or more games in a row.

With the all the misery and chaos up to this point I still can't get over the fact of why the Cubs management wanted to help other teams in the playoff race by trading some of the best quality players (exception of Todd Walker). Greg Maddux and Phil Nevin are in thick of the playoff hunt which they deserve. Also I hate to admitt it, but that punk Todd Walker is riding the high horse with the Padres (that lucky half-ass playing putz). Why do the Cubs have to always suffer in vain by not getting anything out of these deals? I say go ahead and start handing out the pink slips, don't wait 'til October.

P.S. Wishing a full recovery to Michael Barrett who suffered a groin injured this past week against the Giants. Hang up there and get well soon Mike!

Lee's blast leads Cubs to 7-2 victory

There was finally something to smile about Wednesday as the Cubs and Pirates hooked up for the third game of the series at Wrigley. It was a special day since it was Derek Lee's 31st birthday. He declined Coach Baker's offer to sit out. It's a good thing that Lee played. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th Lee launched a grand slam, the seventh of his career. That's just how big of an impact the star first baseman has in the lineup. Man, have the Cubs missed his bat.

Michael Wuertz (2-1) recorded the win despite a magnicient pitching performance from Rich Hill. His numbers are the following:

7.1 IP, 4 H 2 R 1 ER 2 BB 11 SO 0 HR

The young prospects continue to show promise and make good progress. They can definitely use the rest of the season to develop their pitching skills. There is still so much for them to learn. It was a good day for most of the youngsters. Matt Murton and Ryan Theriot both collected 2 hits. Henry Blanco been serving well as a replacement to Michael Barrett. Of the course, this game really was all about Derek Lee. I'm glad he started and wanted to play. However, it I was Baker I'd probably would've asked if the slugger wanted the day off too. (Obviously, that would have been a mistake).

D Lee has hit 5 homeruns on birthday on 4 consecutive years. That one helluva good reason to have him in the lineup. I'm looking forward to seeing him 100% healthy next year. It truly stinks that the season has to end with negative results. They can only try to play the role of spoilers and at least help the Reds clinch a playoff spot. This is a time (even though it should've been effectively done in the off-season) where the Cubs organization needs to do real strategic planning and thinking. Finding enough chemistry and talent should be the main concern.

The agony of defeat, Cubs outjousted 7-4

Times are getting far beyond desperate in Wrigleyville. Injuries have piled up in a heap. The pain of Cub fans seems never ending. Sunday the Giants took full control, wrapping the series with a victory. Again Barry Bonds homered to reach 729 for his career. Oh, my how swell. I've couldn't more happy for that lying bastard! (I hope the U.S. grand jury and Congress nail his ass) What did the Cubs get out of this marvelous Sunday before Labor Day? Only a groin injury for Michael Barrett and arm problems for Angel Guzman. That's been the whole season in a nutshell.

I guess the 4 runs the Cubs mounted account for something meaningful. Juan went 4-for-5 though crossed the plate once since practically everyone else in the lineup couldn't scrap out hits. Having to sit and watch young Cub pitchers struggle and work out of jams is pretty much torture. The offense obviously won't ever help them much so the pressure is always coming to be on them. Guzman did pitch 4 innings as the starter until experiencing a nagging pain in his arm and being replaced thereafter. Guzman gave up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. This isn't a bad performance at all yet Cubs management can't expect these young guns to work miracles or salvage the rest of the season. That was out the window months ago.

Derek Lee didn't start, but did come on later to pinch hit. At this low point, nearing the end of the season why play Lee anyway unless he feels it will help improve his swing. It's not worth risking him getting injured again. If that freaking dumbass Hendry knew how to manage a club he would've kept Phil Nevin at least until the end of the season so he could platoon at first base. The Cubs are on the verge on slipping behind the Pirates for last place in the Central and owning the third worst record in baseball (55-81). Even the reporters for the Chicago Tribune are advising the organization to make serious changes because they know this team is not going anywhere.

What disgusts me the most is that the Cubs had to trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers back in July for an low-market infielder. That will go down as one most stupid trades in Cubs history. To make my blood boil even more is that Todd Walker, who was non-productive and caused too many screwups now finds his no-talented ass in the middle of a playoff race. Of all the shit this season, this is f**king ridiculious! Because of him I truly hope the Padres fall flat on their ass in the final weeks and Walker causes such a diaster, ruining their chances that the whole team gets pissed off at him. If the Cubs reach 70 wins then at least they've achieved some mark, otherwise fans who can't take it anymore may hang themselves with a television cord (Can you really blame them??)

20 hits irrevelant as Cubs get swept by Bucs

The series in Pittsburgh concluded with another 11-inning game, again with the same result. Both teams cranked out 20 hits a piece, but it was the 2-run single by Freddy Sanchez which made the difference. The Pirates rallied again and won 10-9. For the life of me, I can't find any positive points for the Cubs. They battle and battle, but seem to get absolutely no where. For some reason, Dusty Baker pulled Mateo from the game after 2 innings of work. The right-hander had yielded 3 earned runs on 4 hits and a walk.

Well, another odd, unexplained trade was made this week as Phil Nevin is now a member of the Minnesota Twins. The Cubs even added cash in the deal in exchange for a player to be named later. Wow, this is truly another idiotic move by management. Why the hell do these incompetent bastards still have jobs in the front office?? Nobody is made responsible for shit! What is the point in bringing over a player at first base to serve as a fill-in for 4 months then trading him for nothing? This franchise is hell bent on losing while not thinking twice about the mindless, assinine decisions they make.

With all the B.S. going on within this organization I did like the fact that the Cubs bats are generating higher run production. Rookie Ryan Theriot went 5-for-6 yesterday with an RBI and two runs scored. Jacque Jones also added 4 hits in the losing effort. It's plain and simple, the Cubs are not a well-balanced team. They have too many holes in the rotation and don't have enough high-caliber veteran hitters. They'll try to snap a 6-game losing skid today against the Giants at Wrigley. Rich Hill (3-6, 5.81 ERA) gets the start against Noah Lowry (7-7, 3.75 ERA) scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET.

Prolonged misery and castrophes, Cubs lose 5 straight on the road

I've missed a post this week with a busy schedule and all, but I'm really picking up where I left off. The road schedule for the Cubs hasn't treated them kindly. Getting sweep by the Cardinals was the ultimate 'slap in the face' then coming into Pittsburgh and dropping back-to-back contests hasn't shown to be any better. Finally the Cubs have got Derek Lee back and as always it's too little too late. Obviously, the slugger's presence hasn't made a difference in the win/loss column.

The 7-6 loss in extras against the Pirates Tuesday proved the Cubs bullpen still can't hold a lead and that even Zambrano can't guarantee a win in every start. Wuertz, Howry, and Ohman have done as expected. Yesterday was not Ryan Dempster's day. He came up the tying and go ahead run in 10th inning. The offense didn't help the cause either really. Derek Lee reached base 3 times with 3 hits and an RBI, though this is insigniciant when the everyone else fails to contribute in the lineup.

The thing that startles me is that Zambrano has 4 homeruns and over 10 RBIs for the year as a pitcher. There are guys on the bench who don't have that good of production. I bet if any of bench players were ever called on to pitch in relief they wouldn't be able to record 2 outs nor survive one inning.

Heres the Tuesday's game stat line on Zambrano: 7.0 IP 7 H 5 R 3 ER 1 BB 7 SO 0 HR

At the moment the Cubs are up 3-1 in the third inning. Matt Murton drove home two runs with a single in the lst. Juan Mateo is hurling for his second win. These young pitchers need all the support they can get because as a manager you can't expect them to pitch 6-8 innings every start. The Cubs better touch Victor Santos (5-9) for as many runs as they can early. With a 5.59 ERA that's more than possible. Since several young players from Triple-A are getting play time at the Major League level the Cubs might as well call up Felix Pie. The organization needs to see what he's capable of in the Majors. Make him active on the roster, do it NOW!

Losing spell hits again, Cubs can't score against nemesis

Well, it sure looks like this team is intent on finishing up the season with the most crummy record possible. Without the aid of Zambrano the Cubs would've got swept by the Phillies at home. The rookie pitchers can't carry the load. I knew their inexperience would have an stinging effect after a short while. You can't blame these young guns for trying though, plus what does anyone expect when the lineup NEVER provides enough run support. The last two days that's been the case. Today the Cubs scored 1 run and allowed the Cardinals to pull off a victory with a game-winning hit by Gary Bennett in the 9th (Unbelievable, a no-name catcher beats them, how am I not shocked?) Guzman and Mateo have performed well as starters. They've only gave up a few runs in last few starts as the offense has produced hardly anything.

Friday the outcome was no different and the Cubs got shutout 2-0 at the new Busch Stadium. It has come to my attention despite the fact that I rarely watch Cubs on television (what's the point, especially now) that Neifi Perez is now a member of the Detroit Tigers. Yet again, this is another bone-headed move by Cubs management. I'm begging for someone to be fired in the front office, this shit has to end! Those imbeciles in Chicago haven't demonstrated the ability to run this club from the start of Opening Day. They lose their top stars due to injuries and they crap in their pants. I want to know what the hell good can possibly happen by getting rid of Neifi Perez. It's not like the Cubs got squat in return...as usual.

I've completely lost my patience with these ass clowns in the front office. Andy McPhail and Jim Hendry have clearly shown that they're not fit to run a Major League team. I'm sick and tired of them excusing their managerial responsibilities in part to players' injuries. Hell, even without Lee or Wood this club should have won at least 65 games at this point. Instead reaching 70 wins will be a major challenge, which is sad and pathetic. You know there is a huge dilemma when only two players are team leaders and far exceed the performances of everyone else on the team.

Carlos Zambrano leads the team with a 14-5 record and 3.29 ERA while Aramis Ramirez is hitting .288 with 31 homers and 88 RBIs. This proves that a team can't succeed without the strength as a collective unit. As a team the Cubs batting average, on-base percentage, and average run production per game are too dismal to mention. The only thing they can do tomorrow is try to salvage the series with the Cards to at least feel good about doing something right. It's humiliating when a team like the Brewers(62-66) are only 5.5 games back in the Central and that could've been the Cubs. What a shame!

Short run ends abruptly, youngsters having to carry burden

Well, the win streak was flattened with the Cardinals came into town. Winning 1-out-3 in the series at Wrigley didn't cut it. The malfunctions and lack of execution on offense remain visible as they have been all season. I'm surprised they're just 13.5 games back in the Central. The only thing I feel compelled to do now is root on the Reds. Since the Cubs can't make the postseason they're my second favorite pick in the NL. Hopefully Griffey will stay healthy and finish the season, leading the charge in the division race.

You can't fault Rich Hill for the loss yesterday against the Phillies. The bullpen couldn't hold up any type of lead. This team is suspectible and accustomed to lousy relief pitching. This year they've done a better job than in the past. As a team you're just going to have bad days with the bullpen, unfortunately it's a vicious cycle for the Cubs. If the pitching plummets then the offense delivers and vice versa.

I hear the Red Sox put David Wells on waivers. The Cubs need another veteran pitcher so they should try to pick him up, after all he's a dependable lefty with playoff experience (Even though this won't help them this year). The organization needs to relieve some of the burden from the young prospects like Marmol, Hill, and Mateo. Monday night no one hit well besides Aramis Ramirez and Jacque Jones, who both collected 4 hits a piece. Ryan O'Malley will get his second start of the season today against the Phil's new acquistion Jamie Moyer (6-12). O'Malley shoots for first win.

Big Z at work

Cubs snatch victory over Cards in extras

Rolling into the weekend series, things are starting to look up. The Cubs posted 4 straight wins coming into Friday. Then they got socked by St. Louis in a 11-3 clout at Wrigley. The Cubs pitching staff allowed 6 homeruns. Today, however they got the best of the Cardinals...just barely. Thanks to Phil Nevin's RBI single in the 10th inning the Cubs were able to tie up the series at home. I was pushing for the sweep. They still have a chance to take 2-of-3.

I don't think the Cubs would've won today if it weren't for Carlos Zambrano keeping them so close. Sure, he didn't have one of his best outings, but he lowered his walks total and only gave up 2 earned runs through 7 innings. It's too bad he didn't pick up another win because he deserved it. The pitcher of record was Michael Wuertz, who came in the 9th to earn his first win. Juan Pierre, Neifi Perez, and Ronnie Cedeno collected 2 hits a piece. The lineup had 14 total hits, which is a good sign yet they're still leaving too many runners on base. This is hurting their production and chances of winning late in games.

Carlos Marmol is expected to miss his next start due to sore biceps. The strain on the rotation is on-going this season. It looks like no one can stay fully healthy (except Zambrano). These series though with the Cardinals bring out the best in the Cubs. They play their most inspired baseball. If they keep it up, win tomorrow, and return to St. Louis next week they'll put heavy pressure on the Cardinals. They know the Reds are nipping at their tails. Who knows, the Cubs may be able to get the sweep in St. Louis (It all depends on how well the rotation and bullpen hold up, the offense will have to do their part as well).

The Cubs got lucky again today. Phil Nevin's heroics saved the day, giving Jason Isringhausen (4-6) something to remember while leaving him with a bitter taste in his mouth. Speaking on behalf of all Cubs fans, I think it's plain stupid and incompetent managing to not have Phil Nevin playing on a regular basis at first base. Why in Sam hell does Dusty constantly start Mabry over Nevin? It doesn't make any damn sense. The only thing I can figure is because Mabry is a left-handed batter. On the other hand, he's not even hitting .240 nor has decent on-base percentage. If Dusty chooses not to start Phil tomorrow against Chris Carpenter (11-6) Sunday then his brains are indeed scrambled. Juan Mateo (1-0) will get the start for the Cubs. Oh yeah, it's go time, St. Louis.

Win streak intact with sweep in Houston

The farm system has surprisely been beneficial for the Cubs. After a tiresome, extended 18-inning comeback win Tuesday night rookie left-hander Ryan O'Malley was called up to make his Major League Debut against Houston. The kid was marvelous, shutting out the Astros to help the Cubs win 1-0. I'm very pleased with the young prospects' pitching, but what is the lineup's freaking problem? Michael Barrett got the only run with solo homer in the 6th inning. They can't continue to scuffle at the plate if they expect to make strides in the division.

4 hits just happened to be enough behind O'Malley stellar debut performance. What more can the club ask for now? Unfortunately, the success of the young rotation called up from Triple-A won't last much longer I'm afraid. The Cubs were lucky to catch the Astros at the right time. Lance Berkman and company could've easily sealed a victory in the extra innings game Tuesday night, but they couldn't execute. Houston is struggling big time and this reap benefits for everyone else in the Central. With an off-day today the Cubs bullpen will get much needed rest. Then they look forward to the series in St. Louis which actually matters at this point in the season.

At 11.5 games back the Cubs still can do a lot of damage. Another sweep could even put them back in the race as crazy as it sounds. I don't have a clue who else will be pitching in the rotation or how Dusty will work out kinks. This team can't get lazy or be less aggressive. Now is not the time so full concentration is required to keep the winning streak alive. Bring on those Cardinals!

Cubs win two in a row, why not make a run?

The Cubs finished up the weekend series in Colorado, salvaging the series by taking 1-of-3...by the skin of their teeth. All that Carlos Zambrano needed Monday was the 3-run dinger from Phil Nevin (3 hits). That's the way I like it. Not to say that the pitching is going to hold up and the offense will be plentiful for the rest of the season. We all know that's not the case (It usually never is, which saddens me).

You've got to give it to Carlos though, no matter how low the club is he's always ready and willing to give it his best. I truly admire that, especially for a player who's on a losing team that's experienced a series of injuries from their star players. What surprised me, however, last night Zambrano walked 7 batters yet didn't give up a single run. The 3-0 win against the Astros in Houston showed just how dominating Big Z can be on any night.

The stat line on Zambrano: 8 IP 4 H 0 ER 7 BB 5 SO

With the win last night Zambrano (13-5 season) is 6-1 at Minute Maid Park. Sure the lineup produced 10 hits, but they still could've scored a few more runs for their ace. They're lucky because Carlos didn't need much. With the right attitude and motivation I think the Cubs could get the sweep in Houston and let that positive energy carry over to the series in St. Louis. At the moment the Astros and Cardinals are both slipping up a bit in the Central. This should definitely open the door for the Reds.

The best thing for Chicago to do is take full advantage of the opportunity that's presented: gain some ground in the division and improve their record. They're 50-68, currently 12.5 games back which isn't too far away. On the other hand their record isn't good either. It really hurts not having a star-powered pitching rotation or at least another sharp veteran hurler. To me I don't think this team would be any better off now with Prior and Wood. They probably would continue to average only 3-4 innings pitched a game so the ball is in hands of the prospects. They might as well make the most out this one of in a lifetime chance and pitch their heart out.

Mateo (1-0) takes the hill in Houston tonight against Roger Clemens (4-4). It sucks this is how things work out. It most likely won't be a pretty night for the young pitcher or the Cubs. They still can get to Clemens if they're patient and make him get tired towrard mid-innings. Good luck with that happening! Jones, Barrett, and Pierre have to take charge in the lineup. Go Cubs!

Out West, Cubs hope to avoid further humiliation

After departing Milwaukee, grabbing 1-of-3 games the Cubs headed west to continue their road trip. Obviously, last night things didn't favor them as they lost 10-2 against the Rockies at Coors Field. The best stadium for hitters and the Cubs lineup again falters. Then again there is a lack of great hitters on this team currently. Without Derek Lee the Cubs are trifling, they don't even average 4 runs a game. Rich Hill had an off-night, but how long can anyone expect him to pitch scoreless innings in Coors?

Some of the other guys such as Nevin, Barrett, and Jones must pick up the slack on offense. Their performance are key, determining whether this team wins or loses. Also, I don't know why Neifi Perez isn't an every day starter now. He's got big hits this year yet has limited at-bats because Dusty keeps rotating infielders all the damn time. The lineup scored 2 runs on 10 hits Friday night. They left 9 runners on base. Chicago has almost as many losses on the road as they do at home. Nobody within the franchise seems to care which explains why Hendry made such a stupid ass trade with the Dodgers. God, he has no baseball intelligence whatsoever. Oh, have a freaking clue!

Being distracted from baseball, Dusty Baker now finds himself caught in the middle of the steroids investigation. He's set to testify this month concerning former players he's coached. It really doesn't come as a shock that Senator Mitchell wants to use him as a witness. He might as well take part because he's only coaching a depleted team, that only gets worse from one day to the next. I don't see how the Cubs are now better off without Greg Maddux. Sure if they would've got a defined, good hitter like Jeff Kent or Rafael Furcal then it would've been worthwhile.

That's just not how Cubs management works unfortunately. They don't want to spend any money, obtain high-caliber star players, or take any risks. It so infuriating to watch another historically-diastrous season. Sometimes as a fan you wonder why the hell you've been so loyal over the years. At Coors Field, the Cubs should take advantage of every scoring opportunity they get and make up for all those games they wasted base runners. The ball should be leaving the yard several times for them tonight. The thin air in the mountains favors any team that plays there.

Rookie Angel Guzman makes the start against the Rockies' Josh Fogg (7-7). The game is already underway. If the Cubs offense gets in gear this game might be worth watching. Otherwise I won't bother catching much of it on WGN. Luck better be on Mateo's side, that's all I got to say. You never know what to expect with the lineup. The Cubs don't need to screw up in this series too. Good luck!

Zambrano drops consecutive starts, lineup scuffles

I though the Cubs had an excellent chance for a sweep to start the road trip. It wasn't to be as usual. Carlos Zambrano obviously didn't have his best stuff against the Brew Crew. The loss wasn't his fault though because the Cubs lineup only got 3 hits. How pathetic is this for a professional baseball team. Not ONCE has the lineup shown any consistency in a string of games this season. The Cubs let starter Dave Bush dominate them, allowing him to decitate the control of the game.

Stat line on Zambrano: 4.2 IP 5 H 6 R 4 ER 4 BB 4 SO 1 HR

The 3 runs the Cubs did score came off the bat of Aramis Ramirez, who launched a bomb in the 6th inning. No one hardly reached base. Pierre managed one hit in 4 at-bats. Phil Nevin struck out 4 times while the rest of the lineup couldn't buy a hit as it appeared. When will the woes ever end? I don't want to wait until next year. There needs to be defined improvement in the coming months.

Mark Prior (1-4) will get another chance to redeem himself as he gets the start at Miller Park. He squares off with Doug Davis (7-6). Man, do the Cubs need to get the ball rolling. Doing some damage this month can at least spoil the fun for the Cardinals. If anything at least help out the Reds.

Cubs travel to Milwaukee with heads held high

Sox fans can't give Cub fans too much grief now because the tide has changed. The Cubs have actually been winning games, at home, and looking half-way decent as a club. With the day off Monday, it gave the coaching staff and team to gather their thoughts and hopefully work out adjustments and practice more on fundamentals. Every team wants to avoid those nasty errors on the field. Dusty has been lucky recently with his lineup. Eventually this luck will run out. Angel Pagan should get more playing time in left field.

I have a feeling the Cubs bullpen will get wore out against the Brew crew because whenever these two teams meet a wild run-scoring affair erupts. No one really knows if Kerry Wood will return at all. This team definitely needs another veteran starter, there is no doubt about it. Managment can't expect the young guys fresh from Triple A to take control, enabling the team to go on a run in August. They've got to be realistic.

I should be interesting to see how Carlos Marmol (4-5) fairs today against Tomo Ohka (3-2). Milwakee is making a serious statement this year in the Central. They're refusing to go easy on any team. Behind Bill Hall, Geoff Jenkins, Prince Fielder, and company they've got plenty of power. I just hope they don't bash the Cubs pitching today. Good luck and go Cubs!

Monday, August 7

Hill looks sharp, Cubs cruise to 6-1 win

Slowly, but surely the Cubs are striving to make their second half worthwhile. I'm still unsatisfied that they didn't sweep the Pirates this weekend. If it wasn't for Zambrano's rough start the outcome could have been different. Then again, the lineup was helpless Friday unable to even to score a run so who knows? Well, with Maddux gone Thank God the young pitching staff is starting to come around. Rich Hill pitched a terrific game today!

The rookie southpaw pitched 7 innings while yielding only one earned run. He also fanned 9 batters. Not too shabby for an inexperienced youngster. How long he can pitch like this though? I still feel another veteran starter is needed in the rotation. Prior and Zambrano aren't enough to help this team finish the year with a decent record. There were chances to pursue the right talent, but like always Cubs managment looks for leftover nobodies.

Coming up short on runs Sunday wasn't a problem for the lineup as Ronnie Cedeno provided the power with a 3-run shot in the 4th inning. The Cubs got an extra insurance late with a sacrifice fly from Angel Pagan. Aramis Ramirez continued his torrid hitting, going 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Tomorrow is an off day for the Cubs. They finished the homestand at an 8-3 clip. They really could use a long winning streak as they start their road trip again. They see the Brewers Tuesday for a 3-game bill. Time to get cracking with those bats!

Saturday, August 5

The 1-2 punch in the rotation

Pirates grab first game, but Cubs rebound in Game 2

Friday wasn't a good day for Carlos Zambrano. He'd been a roll in the last month or so, winning 7 games in consecutive starts. At 12-4 he's still having a splendid year. The Cubs ace scattered 5 earned runs on 9 hits and 3 walks. The offense gave him absolutely nothing. This has happened way too many times in the past. Pittsburgh's starter just got lucky, seeing the Cubs for the first time. Rookie are surprising when faced for the first time.

The Cubs attacked right back today as they just rapped up a 7-5 victory. Matt Murton hit his 6th homer of the year and Angel Pagan added an extra insurance shot of his own. Mark Prior (1-5) finally collected his 1st win. His total pitch count was 103 as he went 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. I'm glad to see someone in the rotation besides Zambrano pick up the slack. The fact that Ramirez and Barrett have been consistent at the plate is also a good sign.

To me I think the Cubs needed to sweep the Pirates and then focus on the upcoming series with the Brewers. Splitting the series with Arizona didn't help the Cubs in the standings. The way St. Louis is playing it's ridiculous how the Cubs don't take full advantage. If the Cardinals lose today then Chicago is 12.5 games back in the division. That's hard to believe since the Cubs have to win 18 games to reach .500. They've to really concentrate and commit to even get close to the Astros and Brewers. Cincy has cooled off tremendously since the first half. If the Cubs would've just won 5 or 6 more games back in June and July they'd be okay now.

Sunday the Cubs give the ball to Rich (1-4) against Pirates starter Ian Snell (9-7). If the wind is blowing out the Cubs lineup better bring their whooping sticks. Hill will need all the offense he can get, they don't even have to hit the long ball just drive in ample runs. Juan Pierre's presence on base will be a big factor. In RBI spots and in the clutch Aramis and Barrett should deliver. Oh yeah, and Dusty keep Nevin at first base!

Wednesday, August 2

Cubs win 5 of the last 6 games, trade with Dodgers bogus

Finally something had sparked a plug in the Chicago Cubs. They did lose their first game against Arizona, but rebounded Tuesday winning 9-3. The lineup hit 4 homers (Ramirez, Jones, Barrett, and Murton). Rich Hill was able to record his first win in the Majors as he pitched 8 innings while giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits and a walk. The rookie struck out 6 in the effort. The lineup collected 12 hits. Neifi Perez got the start at second base and will most likely be a regular everyday position player.

Right before the trade deadline the stubborn Cubs GM finally decided to work a few deals. I still can't believe, which goes for any team, that Greg Maddux would be traded for someone like Cesar Izturis! Has Jim Hendry lost his f**king mind?!! Talk about demising a veteran player's value, these guys in the front office are dim and are so incompetent. I don't see any damn logic behind acquiring an infielder is mediocre at best, hitting .260 on the year, and doesn't have any power. Speed is not an issue here. The Cubs already have that.

It getting to be a tired old pattern and disgrace of how Cubs management depreciates their best players' worth to the team. For God sakes, Maddux is 40, but you can a hell of lot better than retrieving a small-market, no-name infielder who doesn't have a proven track record. The trade is stunning, why would any team waste such quality talent and leadership? You stupid ass, sorry son of b****, f**king jackasses! The one good deal was shipping Todd Walker to the Padres. Yet again the Cubs got practically nothing in exchange ( I kinda expected this anyway, they should've added Walker in a 3 or 4 player trade, heck it probably still wouldn't have made a difference). The Cubs got some pitcher, Jose...oh who gives a shit! Like this unknown player can really help the Cubs.

Today Carlos Marmol (4-4) gets the start against Enrique Gonzalez (3-2) at Wrigley 8:00 p.m. ET. I'd like to see Aramis continue his red hot streak and crank out a few dingers. I swear though if Dusty gives Mabry the start again at first I might have to send him some hate mail. The guy is pushing the envelope too far. Use Nevin at first, hello he has power and can drive in runs in the clutch! Dusty, please reevaluate your lineup and push Jones and Barrett up towards the middle of the order. They belong there. Go get 'em Cubs!

Monday, July 31

Cubs sweep Cardinals at Wrigley, Zambrano magnicient!

The weekend series at home couldn't have played out better for the Cubs. They actually dominated their division rival, putting the pressure on their pitching staff. Sunday afternoon the starting lineup took care of business again, outhitting the Cards 11-8 for a 6-3 win. The Cubs touched up Chris Carpenter for 5 runs as he didn't last past the 4th inning. On the flip side, Carlos Zambrano had another inspiring pitching peformance. As the season progresses Big Z only get better.

This club would be dead last in the Central, having little desire to compete without Zambrano. He climbed to 12-3 and pitched 6 innings: 5 h 2 ER 2 R 5 BB 5 SO. He is the team's miracle. Whether the Cubs can go on a frantic winning streak or not Carlos is still the prime leader of this team. To help him out on offense, Aramis Ramirez got 3 hits and an RBI. Zambrano even hit a single and drove in a run.

The bullpen did a fine job only giving up one run in the 9th which was credited to Ryan Dempster, who captured his 21st save. The Cubs record stands at 43-61. They have one heck of a job of catching up in the Central. I'm not expecting too much. Getting to .500 should be a primary goal. Then if that happens they can push for 3rd or 2nd place. With the Reds, Cards, and Astros anxious for a playoff spot it won't be easy. Today the Cubs see the Diamondbacks for another 4-game series then the Pirates come to town. The road trip will start with the Brewers and Rockies. It really sucks not having Derek Lee in the lineup. Until he does return, keep playing inspired baseball and don't give up guys!

Saturday, July 29

Nevin, Perez, Dempster, and Barrett congratulate one another after a rare win at home.

Cubs have Cardinals number at Wrigley

Coming off back-to-back victories against St. Louis at home the Cubs have their focus set on a sweep. It's strange that the Cubs have yet to lose to the Cards this year at Wrigley. This sure as hell doesn't explain why they suck so bad against every other team in NL there. Friday night's 6-5 win was aided immensely by Juan Pierre, who hit a 3-run triple and a double. His ability to get on base and drive in runs at the lead-off spot loomed largely in their favor. It also helped that Scott Rolen made an error in the 4th inning.

John Mabry hurt his former team by cracking a 2-run shot while Jacque Jones broke an 0-for-63 streak when batting with an 0-2 count. He went 2-for-4 on the evening. Despite giving up 7 walks Carlos Marmol only earned 3 runs and went on to pick up his 4th win. Luckily the Cubs haven't had to face the Cards' ace yet. It's a surprise that the lineup has started to be more productive too especially without Derek Lee. Ramirez is definitely on fire and hopefully that will carry over to the rest of the team.

In today's game the Cubs are up 3-1 in the 6th inning behind Greg Maddux's steady pitching. Pierre has hit another triple (9th) and Michael Barrett has driven in a run. The offense needs to keep this up and let it carry over into the upcoming series at Wrigley Field. The rivalry against St. Louis always brings the best out in the Cubs even when they're at their lowest point. Count on another exciting game tomorrow as the Cubs close the series at home against the Cards. Then they meet the D-backs and Pirates for the homestand.

High pitch count affects Prior from continuing no-hit bid

The turn of events to Wednesday's game at Shea Stadium was truly mind-blowing. To say it was another crushing loss is an understatement. Mark Prior (0-4) finally gets back on track and doesn't allow a hit through 5 scoreless innings. Meanwhile the Cub bats' who struck for 8 runs the following day can't produce jack freaking SQUAT! What the hell is this team's problem with run production? They have an offensive meltdown practically every other day.

Due to a high pitch count (103) determined by the coaching staff Dusty jerked Prior from the game and brought in Will Ohman to resume the no-hit bid. If Prior felt okay to pitch further into the game why on earth would Baker make such a blatant stupid decision? To make matters worse after making a solid play at short, Ronny Cedeno has another communication blunder in the shallow outfield and allows the Mets to break up the no-hitter. Of course, the offense won't response in time so the Cubs go on to lose 1-0.

This makes the 11th time the Cubs have been shutout in 2006, the most in the Majors. This is far from pathetic, it's a slap in the face to fans. They don't want to buy tickets and go to games to see this team always lose. No one in the right position is speaking up about this CRAP! Enough is enough, failure of this magnitude should no longer be tolerated. Tonight changes better take place as the Cubs return to Wrigley for a 4-game series with the Cards. Rich Hill (0-4) gets the start in place of the injured Sean Marshall against Jeff Weaver (4-11). It will only be a matter time before Pujols bust out the whooping stiff.

Maddux collects 8th win, Lee back on 15-day DL

Going into New York this week for a 3-game series with the Mets didn't scare the Cubs. They had finished the weekend being sweep by the Nationals. Aramis Ramirez was the only player in the lineup providing the punch on offense. He's starting to heat up, hitting 5 homeruns in last 4 games. The Cubs need more of this, unfortunately it comes too little too late. Yesterday the lineup roughed up Steve Trachsel for 8 runs, cracking 3 homers (Barrett 11, Ramirez 22, and Jones 16), They won barely, 8-7 as Greg Maddux picked up the W.

Maddux had not got a win in his prior 3 starts. With 12 hits and 8 runs it was enough for him on Monday. The bad news for the club again is another player is injured. After Sunday's game at Washington the Cubs decided to put Derek Lee on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his right wrist. Nobody can stay healthy on this team in 2006. I don't even think Mark Prior is 100%. Right now they're just a hobbling, insufficient team.

Picking up the slack, Phil Nevin and Matt Murton both managed 2 hits a piece Monday against the Mets. Nevin drove in two runs which definitely helped the cause. With Lee's departure the Cubs will recall first basemen Ryan Theriot from Triple A Iowa. This is good for the young prospect, but why haven't they called up Felix Pie or Nic Jackson? Their pitching is in a bad state as well now. The Cubs may have waited too long to pick up another dependable right-hander or southpaw. Marmol is doing okay in the rotation, but a replacement is needed. Hey, Ben Sheets is back with the Brewers, why not try to make a deal for him?

Going for consecutive wins today the Cubs give Carlos Zambrano (10-3) the start at Shea Stadium against Tom Glavine (11-3). This is sure to be a real pitcher's duel if both guys bring their best stuff. Knowing these two star pitchers there will be few hits and plenty strikeouts. Carlos may have to reach back for a little extra to out perform the crafty veteran southpaw. You can do it Carlos!

Cubs pray for answers in Game 3 against Nationals

With Derek Lee out of the lineup again today, the Cubs try to find another offenisve source to outscore Washington. Currently, they're down 6-3 in the 8th inning. Aramis Ramirez has hit a pair of homers, duplicating his performance from Friday. It's evident that one player alone will not help the Cubs win or get back in this game. Michael Barrett has a pinch hit single, but the rest of the lineup isn't producing.

Yesterday Prior had another dismal start only surviving 3.1 innings and surrending 4 earned runs. He also walked 3 batters. The Cubs did punch out 6 runs, but to no avail since Roberto Novoa came in during mid-innings and gave up 3 more runs. That's how things always go for the Cubs. Today is no different as the lineup struggles again to drive in runs. When Pierre gets on base there is no excuse for them to fly out, strikeout, pop-out, and fail to move him along. This guy has stole 36 bases and the effort is wasted 80% of the time.

The Nationals have won 4 more games than the Cubs so far this season and may be in route to winning their 42nd. Quick note: Sean Marshall had to leave the game in the 4th inning with a strained oblique muscle yet he only allowed 2 runs on 6 hits. The way the offense and pitching has wavered all year it's stunning that team management isn't doing a damn thing. They just sit back on their ass and watch for results. What the hell is their freaking problem? This season was shot from the start so go ahead and make a few trades instead of letting this team suffer until September.

I see Dusty Baker elected to start Phil Nevin in left field today, bold move though also unnecessary. Why he continues to start John Mabry is beyond reason. Since Lee is getting a day off Mabry is over at first. The Cubs need another bench player who can play multiple positions, but serves more of a purpose on offense rather than defensively. Hendry doesn't want to make any rash decisions concerning Baker's future, stating he hasn't had a healthy team to work with this year. This doesn't mean the Cubs should slip to the bottom of the league and earn one of the worst records in baseball this year. Soon the Pirates will even jump in front of the Cubs in the Central. Wake up Cubs management and actually show you care for once!

Maddux outdueled by Clemens, Cubs lose 4-2

What is the deal with the Cubs' wretched play at home? They've won less than 30% of their games at Wrigley. I can't fathom this statistic. Anyway, it was another tough loss Wednesday night. Greg Maddux pitched as good as anyone could ask. It was Roger Clemens who came out on top. Simply put he just pitched a better game. You couldn't expect old Mad Dog to go 9 innings for a complete game shutout. The savvy veteran pitched 7 innings while allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs. but no walks.

When the Cub bats only bang out 6 hits for the game you know they've got a slim chance of coming back. The two runs scored came from Todd Walker's pinch hit homer in the 8th inning. That's how dismal the offense was last night. To be honest, this doesn't surprise me one bit. Obviously, against a hard-thrower like Clemens they're going to scuffle, especially when he bring his A game.

To counter the loss the Cubs will try to claim the series, sending Carlos Zambrano (9-3) to the mound. He's pretty much their only hope to take 2-of-3 and at least enable the Cubs to slightly improve their record at home (God, I can't believe how damn horrible they play at home. Somehow there is a jinx and it has to be destroyed). Zambrano and Andy Pettite (8-9 4.99) will be the starters for the 2:20 P.M. ET game today. Gun for their 10th win Carlos!

Walker makes no excuses for costly errors, Hendry still a douche

The chaos and utter humiliation that unfoiled Sunday afternoon at Wrigley gave everyone connected to the franchise something to think about. For me as a die-heart fan it made me wonder if this team will ever stop having bad luck and be ridden of a 98-year curse. What happened against the Mets was a mere vision from the past, it just didn't occur during a crucial game or in the playoffs (yeah, I'd rather forget about the 1989 series, 2003 with the Marlins, etc.)

After pretty much opening the flood gates as if it were a tsunami, Todd Walker admitted he cost the Cubs the game. To be fair, it wasn't all his fault. He had a few errors in the field then the bases got loaded twice. Hey, that could happen to anybody (No only to this club) Besides someone else would've made an error, it's got nothing to do with concidence, only destiny. Teammates Michael Barrett and Phil Nevin responded to the direct blame. They firmly agreed the blowout wasn't Walker's fault. They're right, Walker didn't control the wind which is logical. However, this factor alone lets anyone know that God isn't a Cubs fan. If the Cubs ever manage to get a huge lead early in a game I bet there will be a rainout, causing them to make it up another day.

This is why it's beyond me that so many fans buy tickets to see the Cubs play at home and on the road. Wrigley Field's average attendance per game is around 40,000. Why are fans supporting them so much? Take a few games off, it's not the end of the world. If anything (I've said this before)it will wake up that miser Hendry to reality. He knows without revenue from ticket sales, concession, and ballpark merchandise he'll be in a pickle. By sticking it to the GM and owner maybe this franchise will have a future worth investing in and being proud of again. I just don't see that at the moment. Nobody wants to make the big decisions or draw the Cubs into contention again. This year has been disatrous from the start, but there is no sense in wasting it completely. Make some trades you cheapsake Hendry, the fans have spoken, DAMN IT!

Tragedy strikes again with field of errors

This short week returning to play after the All-Star break, things seemed to be progressing gradually for the Cubs. They had won 4 out of the last 5 games coming into Sunday. Winning the series against the Mets would be a real motivator. Like having a chance to creep back the division, reach .500 again, or most of all clinch the playoffs it wasn't meant to be at all. Today at Wrigley the Cubs jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to RBI doubles from Aramis Ramirez and Michael Barrett.

In the second inning, helping his own cause, Sean Marshall hit a solo homer. The Cubs took a 5-0 lead into the 3rd inning. Of course, the Cubs lineup squandered a couple scoring opportunities in the early innings. Ronny Cedeno, who's been in a slump came up with the bases loaded, but struck out to end the lst inning. Marshall needed at least 6 runs through 7 innings. Unfortunately, the rookie didn't last that long. He was pulled from the game after giving up a grand slam to Cliff Floyd in the 6th.

Moments later the game got completely away from the Cubs. I don't know why the hell I resumed watching the game 30 minutes later. After being up 5-1 the Cubs allowed the Mets to claim the lead and steal the game as they pounded out 11 runs in the 6th. The Mets hit two grand slams in the same FREAKING INNING! Damn it, I can't believe this shit! Either the wind blows straight out when the visiting team bats or blows in during the bottom half of the inning. All I know is the game turned over a leaf when Todd Walker bobbled a ground ball, allowing Carlos Beltran to beat out a play at first. This threw everything off (Walker should've already been traded by now).

I failed to recognize the bad omen in the lst when Cedeno and Walker couldn't make up their mind who was going to catch a pop-up instead letting it drop on the grass. This is a clear indication that they can't function as a team. If they can't handle basic fundamentals there is no way winning is possible. Also, squandering chances to score against a power-hitting team can't be countered by decent pitching. Cubs management have relied solely on this factor from the start of the season. With Wood done with the year and Prior now sidelined again, the GM and owner sure look like fools!

Ole' Dusty was shown on ESPN during the game throwing his hands up after the first grand slam. Then what dumb move does he make? He brings in Roberto Novoa, like he can handle pressure. He had commented to commentators, Joe Morgan and Jon Miller prior to the opposition's offensive outburst about being satisfied with the work of his bullpen. God, this guy's age must be affecting his mind frame or judgment because I don't think he knows what's going on from one day to the next. Still it's not all his fault either. The players aren't performing up to their capabilities. Making some trades before the deadline is the solution.

The 13-7 loss today at home was another painful experience for all Cub fans. The bitterness can only grow deep down inside until resentment and frustration surface. Those who just can deal with it anymore may have to numb themselves by downing several pitchers of beer (others may just get high, hey, people cope with shame this way all the time). The true victim and poor soul today was Sean Marshall. He had his heart set on his 6th win only to see it slip away in the 6th (that incompetent ass, Walker!) Tommorrow the Cubs get the day off, able to recuperate after the butt whooping they received. They'll see the Astros starting Tuesday for a 3-game series at Wrigley. Preparing to bring out the brooms in advance can only mean you're an Astros fan. My optimism is about dead, can't you tell?

Cubs try to resume win streak after break

The All-Star break came at a bad time for the Cubs. They finished the first half with a 3-game winning streak (which, sadly is their longest in 2006). Before the break Juan Pierre had started to heat up. As a result with him being on base often the Cubs scored more runs. This makes sense, so why couldn't this happen more often in the early months of the season? Without Lee in the lineup this club still had the speed and enough hitters in the lineup. I'd like to see them churn out a 15-20 game win streak as impossible as it sounds.

Many inside sources thought for sure Dusty Baker would be terminated after the All-Star break. Jim Hendry claims he had no plans of determining Baker's future until later. What bothers me is he also doesn't see the need to evaluate Dusty either. This sends up another red flag and poses a serious problem. When a team has performed as poor as the Cubs then everyone, including players and coaches should be assessed and evaluated. That's if management actually cares and wants to create a winning club. So far I've seen different with the Cubs management.

The Cubs have another off-day and will resume play tommorrow against the Mets at Wrigley. They really needed to avoid this team at this point in the season. Normally it wouldn't matter, but the Mets are tearing up the NL East this year with a 53-36 record. For the Cubs, being intimidated though is not an option. They have play at their best and not allow any screwups to ruin their chances of taking the series. Okay, it's time to turn it around and starting WINNING at Wrigley!

Zambrano get intense on the mound. A/P Darren Hauck

Zambrano earns fifth straight win

The last couple of weeks all my postings about the Cubs that have been good involved Carlos Zambrano. At 8-3 he's proved to be the only steady, reliable force in the rotation this season. Despite Maddux having a decent game in his last start, the Cubs haven't been able to depend on Wood, Prior, or fill-ins like Rusch and Marmol. Last night the intangibles lead the Cubs to victory. The pitching was there from Carlos as the lineup banged out 7 runs.

You know there is a good chance of scoring runs when the lead-off hitter reaches base a couple times. That's exactly what Juan Pierre did, producing 3 hits with a RBI. Michael Barrett chipped in as well with 2 hits (double, single) and an RBI. The Cubs should be averaging around 4-5 runs now. Against a team like Milwakee who are Ben Sheets-less they have no excuse. The Cubs have two more games with the Brewers before the All-Star break. They better make the most out of every opportunity they get and take advantage of their opponents weak relief and starting pitching.

I'm still unsatisfied with this team's performance the last few weeks. What makes me really mad though is the fact that Zambrano could very easily be a 11 or 12 game winner with help from the rest of his team. Thanks to the stumbling offense Carlos had a couple no-decision games which really sucks! This guy is too good not to be given reasonable support. The bats have come around for him lately, though will this continue in the second half? God I sure hope so because he may be the only thing Cub fans have to look forward to from mid-July to August. If it gets really bad in September nobody may care. Today Carlos Marmol (1-3) shoots for another Cubs win as he faces Dave Bush (5-6) at Miller Park.

Cubs shutout Astros, Baker has meeting with GM

After another disappointing loss yesterday the Cubs were able to bounce back Wednesday night in Houston, winning 1-0. Behind Sean Marshall the Cubs single run from Todd Walker's RBI double held up. Barrett also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. This was pure luck, on every other night they would have allowed the other team to come back and win. Marshall moved to 5-7 and only yielded 6 hits with 3 walks. This kid has a bright future ahead of him. Let's hope he says in a Cubs uniform.

This week Dusty Baker met with GM Jim Hendry to discuss the team's performance this season, what needs to happen or is expected, and Baker's future. Many people (especially fans) don't think Baker will coach the Cubs for the rest of the season. He may be fired after the All-Star break. Of course this is a great possibility because the club is currently 14.5 games back in the Central and they still can't everything flowing right with Prior and Lee back. There is no doubt it's been a rough year for the Cubs and Baker, sidelined with injuries. This is no excuse from the Cub fans' perspective.

The fans are fed up with the poor level of play and DEMAND change. This is why they pelted the field at Wrigley this past weekend against the Sox. All the frustration and anger has mounted to breaking their boiling point. They simply can't take it anymore. If the fans really want to have an impact on this franchise they'd stop going to games. This would show Hendry and McPhail how they truly feel and be devastating to the team's revenue. It may take a no-show demonstration to get the message across loud and clear to management.

Whether Baker stays or goes won't matter to a hill of beans if this team continues to lose. It's a shame that's reaching .500 has to be a goal right now instead of clinching the playoffs or winning the pennant. If the Cubs let the Brewers or even the Pirates finish ahead of them then their performance for the season will be a disgrace. Everyone within the organization needs to work together and contribute to bring intregity and spirit while actively getting the fans involved. Why not just have an open forum with them in Chicago or a live conference over the Internet?

Traveling on the next stop on their road trip the Cubs will see the Brewers for a 3-game series. Today Greg Maddux (7-8) squares off with Chris Capuano (9-4). The lineup better start scoring more runs. Maddux also must bring some of good stuff and have enough endurance. Otherwise, the Cubs won't fair any better than they did with the Astros and White Sox. Come on, let's shoot for two in a row, wooooooo!

Trade talk circulates again, Cubs drop first game against Astros

With all the problems the Cubs have experienced this season it's a wonder that they haven't gone insane. They closed out the weekend against the ChiSox, grabbing one game to salvage the series (if that is even possible at this point). Zambrano was able to collect his 7th win behind ample offense on Sunday. The bats banged up on Mark Buerhle, scoring 7 runs in the first run (why on earth can't they hit like this against less quality/bad pitching). The offense truly astonishes me. For 5 games in a row they will score 1-3 runs, struggling to provide necessary run support then wham they figure out how to hit again.

Lately trade rumors are going around that the Cubs are prepared to deal away a group of players. Are the two bozos in the front office actually going to make a move? To them it doesn't seem to matter how much time they waste managing the team or the lack of management. If I were them though I'd go ahead and trade Wood because he's been a bad investment and his condition doesn't look like it's going to change. Despite being a veteran who's actually healthy, I'd do the same with Greg Maddux. His age is creeping up on him and he's towards the end of his career. Keeping him until the end of the year would be okay if he can regain some of his best stuff and composure on the mound.

As for the rest of the club, it would be smart to get rid of a few relievers (Novoa, Ohman, maybe Howry even) as well as find a temporary or permanent replacement for Juan Pierre and Matt Murton. I still don't know why the Cubs haven't brought up Felix Pie from Double A. The guy is killing the baseball. This team needs another fresh, quality arm in the rotation and another bat who can play in the outfield for sure. No, this doesn't mean rotating Phil Nevin, SOMEONE ELSE DUSTY! If management is going to pull some strings they might as well do it as soon as possible. The season can't get any worst.

At 30-52 a fan can only think that things will improve. What's embarrassing is that the Brewers are not only in front of the Cubs, but remain 4.5 games back from the Cardinals in the division. They finally put together a good team, wow! In today's game Mark Prior (0-3, 9.00 ERA) combatants Andy Pettitte (6-9, 5.58 ERA) at Enron Field. The game is already underway. Taking 2-of-3 in this series at Houston can give this club the positive energy they need plus leave the Cubs faithful happy and with something to cheer about. Alright, take care of those Astros...and don't get your asses handed to you again.

Cubs can't buy a win

This season has been a tragedy since April for the Cubs. Their lackluster performances have earned them a spot towards the bottom of the NL Central. They can't blame anyone but themselves. With Prior and Lee back things are still out of wack. Nothing at all is clicking for this club. The sad part is the struggle and diastrous play looks to continue for the rest of the season. It's too much to take as a Cubs fan. I have lost my patience with this team.

Coming into this weekend everyone knew the Cubs stood no chance against their mighty cross-town rivals in another interleague series. It doesn't matter that the Cubs played at home because they don't execute. They even seem to play their worst baseball at home, they're 1-10 in June at Wrigley, which is mind boggling. Today they could've beat the Sox, losing 8-6 and like so many times before they fail to get the job done. Ryan Dempster gave up a 3-run dinger to A.J. Pierzynski in the 9th with 2 outs. What's wrong with Dempster now? He can't hold a lead. Maybe Dusty should give him a couple days off or use him as a set up man. Obviously, he's not cutting it as the closer right now.

The blown save and loss was too frustrating and infuriating for the home crowd as they flung cups and trash onto the field, delaying the game for five minutes after Pierzynski's homer. Watching their team come so close then fall apart again has to drive fans crazy. It just makes Cubs fans want to strangle the person sitting next to them or break something. Friday was no different as they lost 6-2. Marshall allowed 4 earned on 8 hits while going 6 innings.

I don't see anything getting better. With the way Prior (0-3) has pitched since his return, the offense scuffling off and on, lack of execution (stranding runners on base, failing to score runs in key situations), and the shaky relief pitching problems will only mount further for the Cubs. Also, putting Phil Nevin in left field isn't going to make a difference. It doesn't matter what position he play when he only gets one hit or goes 0-for-4. Contribution from anyone on the team means so much now. At least Michael Barrett is back from his 10-game suspension. He did the right thing by making amends with Pierzynski though it would've made Cub fans feel better if he'd slugged him again.

At this point you can only hope for a better day and a transition that will lead to at least a couple wins in a row. However, the suffering won't end because players are just not healthy (Wood) and others don't want to step up and commit to really doing their job (Hendry, McPhail, Baker). I'm sick and tired of waiting for next season...ah just screw it.

Tuesday, June 27

Wrigleyville is a sad place to be this year

When all is dim and hopeless the Cubs organization turns their focus to next season. The planning ahead and promise of a better future is meaningless to fans. Too many times the Cubs faithful have had their hearts crushed and fell into despair much like the club. Already in June, the Cubs have really hit rock bottom. Even with Derek Lee back the losing streak and unethusased, trifling play resumes.

Last night the Cubs moved further down in the Central, 18 games below .500, getting shutout 6-0 to the Brewers at home. I still for the life of me can't comprehend how horrible the Cubs are at Wrigley. It's like they care, this is inexcusable. The bats can all of sudden hit on the road here and then, but at home they go ice freaking cold! What is the deal?

To make matters worse (as if they're not already) Greg Maddux has lost his command and best stuff. Monday night he did pitch 7 innings, but surrendered 5 runs on 7 hits. He is 2-8 in last 10 starts. If they Cubs can't get consistent pitching nor hitting they've got nothing. In only his second game back, Derek Lee went 2-for-4. Perez got 3 hits as well. The rest of the team, almost jack squat! Obviously from what Lee commented about the team not showing up is true. They haven't seem prepared or ready to play competitive baseball the whole season. This is a reflection on Dusty Baker. He hasn't motivated this team enough.

The blame also has to put on Hendry and McPhail, who should move out of Chicago or maybe just retire from baseball. They've showed their inability to manage this franchise and handle conflicts/challenges. Again, today all eyes will be on Carlos Zambrano to end the Cubs 8-game home losing streak. If there is anyone management needs to invest more money in it's him. At 6-3 Carlos is the positive factor on the Cubs thus far. Alright, it's time to end this drought, go Cu....on second thought go Zambrano!

Thursday, June 22

With Zambrano at the mound, everything is A-okay

The Cubs 9-2 win last night against the Indians in the third game of the interleague series demonstrated why Carlos Zambrano is so valuable to his team. He doesn't necessarily have to rack up lofty strikeout totals to be effective. Going the distance without giving up many runs is his strong point. That's exactly what Carlos did Wednesday night in a shortened game due to rain in Cleveland, pitching 6 innings while yielding 2 on 6 hits and 3 walks.

It's good to see Henry Blanco making the most of his usual rare playing time. He got 2 hits (double, single) and a RBI. This kind of production is welcomed and definitely needed. The lineup did their job. Everyone got at least one hit except Phil Nevin, compiling 13 total hits. Aramis Ramirez showed signs of breaking out of his hitting funk, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Neifi was the player of the game though, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, a single, and 2 RBIs.

Unfortunately, the Cubs organization has to bare more bad news as Kerry Wood may be out for the rest of the season. This can't be a more crushing blow if this is the case. Wood was checked out by doctors, but didn't appear to have any further problems with his throwing arm. Yet in a simulated game he only able to reach around 70 pitches and then has nothing left in the tank, having something to do with strength in the arm.

Cubs fans can't really cry over this despairing announcement because we all knew it was bound to happen again sooner or later. I think it's best if the Cubs just let Kerry Wood go, trade him for the best possible talent available. This may be difficult since Wood is an injury prone pitcher. Few teams may want to take a risk signing him. With that said, there is good news, believe it or not. Derek Lee is expected to return soon, projected to make a short minor league rehab stint. Dusty and the organizations feels Lee needs time to see and hit various pitching before coming back to the lineup. The Cubs can do this, but shouldn't put him in a position to get hurt again. That's the last thing this team needs. Until then, I wish a full speedy recovery Derek, looking forward to his return.

Tuesday, June 20

Finally, by the grace of God a Cubs victory!

Rolling into Cleveland didn't shake the Cubs after completing a terrible home stand. For reasons unexplained, Chicago is playing much better on the road than at Wrigley. To me, this makes absolutely no sense. With the great attendance and outpour of support you'd think this team could win more games at home.

Monday, the offense returned as they faced mediocre pitching. Serving as a backup to Michael Barrett, catcher Henry Blanco went 3-for-4 with a homerun and 3 RBIs. Jacque Jones also homered to help lead the Cubs to a 12-8 win. Sean Marshall obtained his 6th win of the year. He didn't pitch his best game by far, but it was enough.

Scheduled for today to start is Greg Maddux (7-6, 4.82) vs. Lee (5-5, 5.04). The Cubs are in dire need of sweeping the Indians. This of course, is no easy feat with the streaky power hitting of Travis Hafner. The Cubs should be able to get to Cleveland if they can get to their bullpen early. From there they better take every opportunity they get to capitalize and pour it on offensively. Maybe Blanco will have no good game. Go Cubs!

Monday, June 19

Someone please stop the bleeding!

When will the horror end for a team that has lost 6 straight games, including 12 of their last 15. The 12-3 blowout to the Tigers Sunday showed clear indication that the season is getting even worse for the Cubs. The lowly Pirates are creeping up on them in the Central, on the verge of pasting them for fifth place. Mark Prior's season debut was a nightmare. He gave up 6 earned runs on 4 homeruns through 2 innings of work and didn't last but 3.2 innings. His replacement Robert Novoa didn't fair much better, also giving up 4 homeruns.

Since acquiring Phil Nevin not much has changed with the Cubs offense. Run production has been dismal the past month. I don't know what direction the club's management thinks they're going in, obviously it's not forward. It was unfortunate the Cubs have to run into the Tigers this weekend, they're having a miraclous season. Now the Cleveland Indians are coming to town as the city of Chicago can only be excited about the Southside Sox.

How a team can struggle season after season and slide to the bottom of the division, completely out of contention is mind boggling! To understand Cub fans' pain you have to be able to bear what's they're witnessing every week. The lineup got 5 hits on Sunday. It's nearly impossible to win consistently without averaging at least 4 runs a game. The Cubs are lucky to knock home 2 runs per game. All the Cubs runs came from solo homers agaisnt Detroit. This doesn't cut it by a long shot!

The tragic performance from Prior couldn't have come at a worse time. At least his first game is over because I'm sure there much more humiliation left for the remainder of the season. It's been far too long for Dusty Baker not to get aggressive and emotional with his team. He needs to get the players all riled and pissed off. If this team isn't going to find a way to manufacture enough runs, they need to be insulted and ragged on to transfer over to a form of motivation where they're damn well determined to win. Right now they don't look driven to succeed. I may be wrong, but I saw a 2003 team with fire in their eyes. This year is quite different.

Pleading for mercy looks like the best option for the Cubs right now. At 26-42 it's hard to be positive and keep good morale in the clubhouse. Once spirits are crushed, hope is lost, and eerie silence fills the air a team has called it quits before a season is even over. There is absolutely no sense in this club playing so horrible! I don't know when the appropriate changes will come to this franchise or if a turnaround will evolve soon, but the Cubs should want to finish the season with a shred of dignity. Otherwise, they'll just be a showcase for pity and shame.

Wheels turn downhill sharp again for Cubs

After taking 3 consecutive games against the Reds on the road the Cubs return home and have a performance meltdown (or more appropriately, a "letdown"). Losing 5-4 Wednesday night showed why things still aren't clicking for the Cubs. If the offense gets the job done the pitching falters and vice versa. I swear nothing EVER goes right for this franchise. Injuries continue to be a major problem: Scott Willamison, Kerry Wood, and Mark Prior remain on the DL.

The hitting was there last night, contributing 11 hits. Phil Nevin and Michael Barrett both went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Maddux had a meddlesome game, allowing 11 hits and 5 earned runs. What happened to Mad Dog? He came out of the flood gates with 5 straight wins, now look at him. It's getting way too disaapointing to watch the Cubs play this season.

Tonight Carlos Zambrano (5-3) will pull for a victory against the Astros' Chris Burke (0-0). I know Big Z will give the Cubs faithful something to cheer about today. Jacque Jones and the lower part of the lineup need to deliver today and help give Carlos his 6th win.

Tuesday, June 13

Off-day allows rejuvenation, arm stiffness for Wood lingers

The Cubs finished off last week in good fashion. They didn't allow the Reds to overpower them or get the best of them. Closing out the series with 3 wins was much needed as the team resumes play today in Houston with a 3-game set with the Astros. I like what I saw this weekend in Cincy, the Cub bats came around in key situations and delivered when needed. They'll be tested again as they face Andy Pettite (5-7 5.81 ERA) today.

Sean Marshall (3-4 4.43) goes to the mound again in search of his 4th win of the year. The rookie has shown promise, looking good in the last 2 starts. I feel he's going to have a positive impact on the team if he stays instead of being called down to Triple A Iowa. There really is no sense in Marshall not already being a 5 or 6 game winner. The starting lineup couldn't provide much run support for him in his 2 starts.

The real issue now is Kerry Wood. Again he's unable to pitch. Due to prolonged stiffness in his arm he was put on the 15-day DL. As far as he's come in making a recovery this had to happen. For the most part he's resting the arm. The Cubs can't continue to wait for him to get 100% healthy and ready. They can survive a little while longer without Mark Prior, but if Wood gets hit with another injury spell the Cubs may tumble into desperation.

Being 11 games back in the Central, at 26-36 the Cubs can ill-afford to manage without Wood, Prior, and Lee. At the point, however the club should be at least be 2 under .500 or better. With the way the rotation has performed it's a shame the offense hasn't came through in the clutch more often. I don't want to hear any further bad news about Wood, the offense scuffling off and on, or anything going on with this franchise. Just win, win, WIN AND KEEP WINNING!

Maddux earns 325th career win, ends Reds winning streak

Watching Cubs games this year like so many in the past is depressing. When it looks like they going to make a turnover things become bleak (or worse). The good news for Cubs fans is they're responsible for ending the Reds 8-game winning streak on Friday. Also Greg Maddux reached another milestone moving to 13th on the all-time wins list.

Maddux: (W, 7-5) 5.1 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 0 BB 2 HR 2 SO

That's great for Maddux, he deserves the recognition. The 6-5 win was held up by the thinnest margins as Ryan Dempster closed out the game in the 9th to pick up his 10th save. What I have a hard time understanding is why the starting lineup responded with enough runs and hits last night. I know they faced Bronson Arroyo the other day, yet there isn't a real clear explanation to why the lineup can produce for 1 or 2 games then go ice cold the next 6, failing to produce on several scoring opportunties.

Years ago Harry Carey was right, this team isn't going to win enough games without ample offense. Not much has changed since then. They have to drive in sufficient runs or you can forget about it. All the superior pitching in the world won't help if a club can't score runs in crucial situations. The best clutch hitter on the team is Derek Lee and he's still injured so guys like Ramirez, Barrett, and Nevin will have step up to the challenge. They can't worry about a slump forming. They just need to take care of business.

Today in Game 3 of the series between the Reds, Carlos Zambrano (4-3) will shoot for his second straight win as he combatants Brandon Claussen (3-6). The offense better give Carlos at least 4 runs. They aren't facing a tough pitcher so there is no excuse. Dusty should start Walker at second and put Nevin at first. They need more power in the lineup. Go get 'em in Cincy...have some patience at the plate.
